MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State rower Anna Young has been selected to the 2011 Big 12 Conference Fall Chick-fil-A Community of Champions. During the fall, winter and spring terms, one student-athlete from each institution will be honored based on academics, community service along with leadership and sportsmanship.
Young is a senior majoring in kinesiology and holds a 3.019 GPA. She has participated in a number of community service projects during her time at K-State, including Cats 4 Cans every year and the annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Adopt a Family during the holiday season. Young also is active in Project Purple, a fundraising effort created by teammate Sierra Cuda last year to raise awareness and support for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cuda was named to the 2010 Fall Chick-fil-A Community of Champions for her efforts with Project Purple.
In addition to these community service projects, Young also is a member of Athletes in Action, Cats for Kids and volunteers delivering meals with Meals on Wheels.
K-State head rowing coach Patrick Sweeney said Young has been a valuable member of the team all four years and always gives her best effort to help the Wildcats win on the water.
“Anna has consistently been a positive influence on the team throughout her rowing career,” Sweeney said. “She always leads by example with an unassuming attitude and faithful hard work.”
The institution of the student-athletes named to the Chick-fil-A Community of Champions will be awarded $4,500 as a result of their efforts within the community.
