BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – K-State women’s tennis continued action at the Hoosier Classic on Saturday, as senior Petra Niedermayerova carded her first singles win of her final season in a Wildcat uniform, while freshman Riley Nizzi bounced back from her first loss of the season to tally a straight set win at the Indiana Tennis Center.
Niedermayerova, ranked No. 12 in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national singles rankings, tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nini Sujashvili of Western Michigan. The win ended a two-match skid for Niedermayerova who lost her Round of 16 NCAA Singles Championship match to end her 2013 season and dropped her first match of the fall season on Friday.
The product of Brno, Czech Republic, is now 3-5 in her career in this early fall season event and was her first win at the event since 2011 as she did not compete in the 2012 edition of the Hoosier Classic due to her preparations for the 2012 Riveria/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.
For her career, Niedermayerova owns the school record for singles wins with an 81-34 (.704) mark. Her career singles winning percentage of .704 ranks second in school history. She is 66-20 (.767) in matches decided in two sets.
Nizzi registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Yuriko Ono of Western Michigan to improve her brief K-State career record to 4-1. In her K-State debut last weekend at the K-State Fall Invitational, the product of Overland Park, Kan., was the lone Wildcat to win all three of her singles matches.
In doubles play on Saturday, K-State registered just one victory in four matches. The duo of junior Amina St. Hill and freshman Maria Panaite downed Sierra Sullivan and Lauren Bellinger of Cincinnati, 8-6. St. Hill is now 4-1 in this young season in doubles play, while Panaite improved to 2-3.
Kansas State will conclude action at the Hoosier Classic on Sunday. The final round of singles matches start at 10 a.m.
