PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Kansas State women’s tennis players Karla Bonacic and Petra Niedermayerova continued their strong doubles play together at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships on Wednesday with a pair of victories in qualifying action at the Riviera Tennis Club. With the wins, the duo advances to the main draw of doubles at the Riviera/ITA Championships.
K-State head coach Steve Bietau was excited about the results his doubles pairing turned in a second straight day.
“They played well all the way throughout the qualifying round. “They got off to a quick start yesterday against UCLA and played solid in the two matches after that here today. All of these teams are good and all of them create problems for you. Winning three matches in a row against this field is a pretty big accomplishment this early in the season.”
Opening their second day, the no. 28-ranked doubles tandem of Niedermayerova and Bonacic tallied an 8-5 win over Julia Elbaba and Maria Fuccillo of Virginia, in the second round of qualifying play. After a brief break, Niedermayerova and Bonacic returned to the court to hold off the No. 43-ranked team of Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland of Duke to secure their place into the main draw of doubles on Thursday.
Niedermayerova and Bonacic are 5-2 together this season and own a 19-18 mark when paired together. After Wednesday’s two victories, Bonacic owns a career doubles record of 44-50, while Niedermayerova is 38-32.
Main draw play in both singles and doubles at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships begins on Thursday, as No. 14-ranked Niedermayerova will begin her drive for a second straight semifinals appearance in singles. Niedermayerova will face Whitney Kay of North Carolina at 12:45 p.m. (CT). Bietau is encouraged by where Niedermayerova is at right now in her play.
“I would say the best thing that has happened to her singles play is what she has done in doubles. Winning matches this year helps with her confidence even more. Petra understands the importance of this event. She had success here last season and will look to do it again. I am excited with what she can do tomorrow.”
At the 2011 event, Niedermayerova tallied three victories over top-30 ranked opponents to reach the semifinals and earn a berth into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The junior from Brno, Czech Republic owns a career singles record of 51-23 (.689) including a 14-13 mark against opponents ranked in the ITA national singles rankings.
Players that advance to the quarterfinals in singles and doubles play of the main draw at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships will qualify for the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11.
