PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Kansas State’s Petra Niedermayerova advanced to the quarterfinals of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships for the second straight season on Friday with a win in her opening match at the Riviera Tennis Club. Niedermayerova returned to the court looking to advance to the semifinals but was halted in her bid.
The no. 14-ranked Niedermayerova advanced to her second straight quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-3 win over no. 22-ranked Anett Schutting of California in her first match of the day. Niedermayerova returned to the court to face Julia Elbaba of Virginia in the quarterfinals in the afternoon. Elbaba, who Niedermayerova and her doubles partner Karla Bonacic defeated in the qualifying doubles opener on Tuesday, handed Niedermayerova a rare 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
The junior from Brno, Czech Republic won five straight singles matches to begin the fall season (5-1) before dropping her quarterfinals match. She improved her career singles record to 53-25 (.679) including a 15-13 mark against opponents ranked in the ITA national singles rankings. Niedermayerova’s career mark in straight set matches now stands at 45-13 (.776).
Players that reach the semifinals in singles and doubles play of the main draw at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships will qualify for the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11. Niedermayerova still has an opportunity to reach the USTA/ITA National Indoor as either a regional finalist or through an at-large bid.
