K-State AthleticsMANHATTAN, Kan. – The Wildcat women’s tennis team picked up three wins in ITA Regional Main Draw competition today, including two from top-seeded Petra Niedermayerova. Along with Niedermayerova in today’s competition were junior Amina St. Hill and freshman Palma Juhasz.

Niedermayerova, who has now won four-straight singles matches on the season, won both her matches in straight sets. In the first round she faced Arkansas State’s Tamara Slijepcevic, winning 6-1, 6-1. The senior Wildcat then took on freshman Carla Tur Mari of Oklahoma State, winning both sets in similar fashion, 6-1, 6-2. The two wins push Niedermayerova’s season singles record to 4-1 with her four-straight victories coming all in straight sets.

Dating back to last year’s regional, Niedermayerova has dominated Central Regional competition, winning eight straight matches with all eight coming in straight sets. She will look to continue her success in tomorrow’s third round match up against seeded-opponent, Maria Jose Cardona of Kansas University.

Picking up the other win for the Wildcats today was St. Hill, who won her first round match up, 6-0, 6-1, against Jenna Wallace of Western Illinois. In second round play, the junior Wildcat was defeated by No. 4 seeded Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-0. For St. Hill, the 1-1 effort pushes her season singles record to 4-4 with seven of her eight matches being decided in two sets.

Like St. Hill, Juhasz faced seeded competition, except she drew No. 3 Yang Pang of Arkansas in the first round. The freshman put up a spirited effort, taking the first set, 7-5, before dropping the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3. For Juhasz, it ended a two-match win streak as her season, and career, record dropped to 3-2 in singles play.

Competition will continue tomorrow starting at 9 a.m., with the round of 16 and quarterfinal matches of the Main Draw being played. Niedermayerova is the only Wildcat that remains in competition as Maria Panaite and Riley Nizzi finished their lone two singles matches in Thursday’s action.
