LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas State opened the first day of action at the Kansas Invitational with two singles wins and two doubles victories. Senior Petra Chuda and junior Karla Bonacic registered the singles victories to halt personal skids.
Bonacic ended a two-match downturn with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Tessa Lang of Iowa State. The native of Split, Croatia, improved to 2-2 this season and 35-26 in her career. Overall, Bonacic is now 24-24 in straight set matches. Bonacic will face Carolyn Chupa of Indiana in the semifinals of Draw A.
Chuda was able to end a four-match stretch with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Rocio Diaz of Missouri. The victory by the product of Sokolnice, Czech Republic, evened her career record in three-set matches at 12-12. Chuda will face Meghan Cassens of Iowa State in the semifinals of Draw C.
In doubles action, Bonacic was teamed with junior Carmen Borau Ramos for the first time in their K-State careers, and the pair recorded both doubles wins for the Wildcats. The duo opened with an 8-0 blanking of Amelie Amsallem and Maddie Schulte of UMKC.
In their second match of the day, Bonacic and Borau Ramos were able to hold off the strong duo of Sophie Garre and Alecia Kauss of Indiana, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. Bonacic is now 2-3 this season in doubles play, while Borau Ramos improves to 3-4.
Kansas State will continue action at the Kansas Invitational on Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. Doubles play will begin the second day of competition, followed by singles play at 1 p.m.
