Niedermayerova Unbeaten at Thunderbird Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. – K-State women’s tennis registered a pair of doubles victories and five singles wins on Friday on the opening day of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

Senior Petra Niedermayerova, ranked No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, carded a pair of wins on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw of singles. In the round of 32, Niedermayerova tallied a 6-1, 6-2 win over California’s Cecilia Estlander. In the round of 16, Niedermayerova turned in a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Meghan Sheehan-Dizon of BYU.

With the two wins, Niedermayerova improved her school record for career singles wins with an 88-36 (.710) mark. Her career singles winning percentage of .710 ranks second in school history. She is 73-21 (.777) in matches decided in two sets.

Freshman Palma Juhasz picked up K-State’s other round of 32 win. The product of Debrecen, Hungary, defeated Joanna Smith of Arizona State, 6-3, 6-1. She was later defeated in the round of 16 by No. 44 ITA ranked Lynn Chi of California, 6-0, 6-2. Juhasz is now 5-3 this fall, including a 4-1 mark in two set matches.

A pair of K-State’s freshmen rebounded from a first round defeat to record victories on the consolation singles bracket. Maria Panaite set down Aubria Solares of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-1. Panaite is now 3-5 this fall.

Livia Cirnu bounced back for a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tanya Murtagh of Fresno State. Cirnu now holds a 6-4 this fall.

In doubles, K-State notched wins from the pairs of Amina St. Hill and Cirnu and Iva Bago and Juhasz. The duo of Bago and Juhasz, playing in their first match together this fall, dropped Annie Weirda and Kristen Dodge of Michigan, 8-6.

St. Hill and Cirnu evened their record this fall at 1-1, as they defeated a mixed tandem of Morgan Anderson of BYU and Sara Remynse of Michigan, 8-4.

Kansas State will continue action at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday, with doubles action beginning at 9:30 a.m. (CT) and singles play starting at 10:30 a.m. (CT).
