K-State Ends Fall Season on High Note

TEMPE, Ariz. – K-State women’s tennis put an end to its fall 2013 schedule on Sunday afternoon at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Wildcats tallied five singles victories and a doubles win.

Senior Petra Niedermayerova, ranked No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, fought her way to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 5 ranked Annet Schutting of California.

With the win, Niedermayerova improved her school record for career singles wins with an 89-37 (.706) mark. Her career singles winning percentage of .706 ranks second in school history. She is 28-21 (.571) in her career against opponents ranked among the ITA national singles rankings.

Freshman Palma Juhasz picked up a win on Sunday to end her first fall season with the Wildcats. The rookie from Debrechen, Hungary, defeated Sara Remynse of Michigan, 6-4, 6-4. Juhasz is now 6-4 this fall, including a 5-2 mark in two-set matches.

Junior Amina St. Hill tallied a hard fought three-set win over Annie Wierda of Michigan, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. The Gothenburg, Sweden, product owns a 6-6 mark this fall and captured a second straight three-set win. For her career, St. Hill is 26-34 including a 4-7 mark in three-set matches. This is the first time in her career that she has won two 3-set matches in a season.

Joining St. Hill in the win column on Sunday was freshman Iva Bago. Bago notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Joanna Smith of Arizona State. In her first season in Manhattan, Bago is 5-6 including a 4-5 record in straight set matches.

The final singles win came from freshman Maria Panaite. The native of Velika, Croatia, notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fresno State’s Tanya Murtagh. Panaite is now 4-6 in her debut season with the Wildcats.

In doubles, the tandem of Niedermayerova and Juhasz registered an 8-2 win over Smith and Gussie O’Sullivan of Arizona State. The duo of Niedermayerova and Juhasz is now 1-1.

K-State will open its spring 2014 regular season schedule Jan. 24-25 in Athens, Ga., as part of the ITA Kick-off Weekend. The Wildcats will face Arkansas on Jan. 24 and then will play either Georgia or Elon. K-State’s 2014 spring schedule features 10 matches in Manhattan, beginning Jan. 31.
