MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women’s tennis duo of junior Petra Niedermayerova and senior Karla Bonacic will open the 2012-13 season among the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles and doubles rankings announced on Monday. The singles and doubles seeds were also announced for the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
After earning ITA All-American status by reaching the round of 16 at the NCAA Division I Women’s Singles Championships in the spring of 2012, Niedermayerova checks in with a career-high ranking of No. 14 in the preseason ITA national singles rankings. Her previous career-high ranking was No. 17 on Jan. 3, 2012. She is also the top player from the ITA Central Region and is the highest ranked player among the Big 12 representatives in the preseason ranking. This is the second straight season Niedermayerova will enter the season as the top ranked player in the Central Region.
Niedermayerova became the third ITA All-American in the program’s history during the spring of 2012. She joins Karina Kuregian (1994) and Yana Dorodnova (1998) as the only ITA All-Americans in K-State history. Niedermayerova added her ITA All-American honor to a number of honors this season including: All-Big 12 honors in both singles and doubles, Capital One Academic All-District VII At-Large Team honors and Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors.
For the 2011-12 season, Niedermayerova finished with an overall record of 24-13 (.649) including a 9-12 mark against ranked opponents. The product of Brno, Czech Republic, tied her career-high for wins in a season and is tied for fourth in school history for wins in a season.
For her career, Niedermayerova is 48-23 (.676) including a 16-14 mark against ITA ranked foes. Niedermayerova’s career singles winning percentage of .676 ranks third in school history. With 15 wins in the 2012-13 season, Niedermayerova will tie for sixth in school history for career victories.
Bonacic checks in at No. 69 in the preseason ITA national singles rankings. Bonacic remained in the rankings for the duration of the 2012 spring slate and reached a new career-high of No. 65 after a straight set win over No. 22 Maho Kowase of Georgia.
Earning her first career All-Big 12 citation in 2012 in singles play, Bonacic set the pace for the Wildcats’ on the court. The native of Split, Croatia, tallied a career-high 22-9 record including a team-leading 7-2 effort in Big 12 action from the number two position in the singles lineup.
Bonacic was strong in the spring of 2012, as she finished tied for the team lead with a 16-5 mark in dual matches including a five-match winning streak to close out the season. Dating back to the final three matches of 2010, Bonacic has won 35 of her last 42 dual matches and owns a career record of 43-14 in dual match play.
For her career, Bonacic has a 55-33 (.625) record and is 38-28 in straight set matches. With eight more singles wins, Bonacic will move into a tie for sixth on the K-State career singles wins list. Bonacic’s career singles winning percentage of .625 currently ranks sixth in school history.
K-State’s number one doubles tandem of Niedermayerova and Bonacic will enter the fall schedule ranked No. 28 in the preseason ITA doubles rankings. The duo completed the 2011-12 season in the ITA national doubles rankings at No. 66. The duo earned All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches at the conclusion of the 2012 spring season. Together, they finished with a 5-8 overall record and a 4-5 mark in Big 12 action.
For the 28th year, the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., will serve as the host site for the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The national event is set to be played on Saturday, Sept. 29 with pre-qualifying singles and doubles matches, which will once again be hosted by UCLA. Main draw action is slated to run from Thursday, Oct. 4-Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
For the second straight year, Niedermayerova has been selected for the singles main draw of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. Last season, Niedermayerova defeated three opponents ranked among the top-30 in the nation while advancing to the semifinals of the event and earning an automatic bid into the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
Joining Niedermayerova at this year’s Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships will be Bonacic. Bonacic is slated to compete in the pre-qualifying singles tournament. This will be her first appearance in the event. She will attempt to reach the singles main draw by advancing through both the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds.
The tandem will also compete in the doubles tournament together for the first time. As it stands, the duo are listed as alternates for the main draw of doubles play. If a doubles team does not withdraw prior to the event, Niedermayerova and Bonacic will play in the qualifying round in the hopes of winning a bid into the main draw.
Kansas State will open the 2012 fall schedule during the weekend of Sept. 21-23 at an event in Lawrence, Kan.
