MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State women’s tennis will wrap up its 2013 fall schedule this weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Tempe, Ariz., to compete in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, Friday through Sunday at the Whiteman Tennis Center. K-State will make its first appearance in Tempe since the fall of 2011.
Teams competing in this season’s ASU Thunderbird Invitational are: Arizona State (hosts), BYU, California, Fresno State, K-State and Michigan. Doubles action will begin at 9:30 a.m. (CT), each morning and singles play will begin at 10:30 a.m.
As a team, the Wildcats will bring in an overall singles record of 30-22 led by freshman Riley Nizzi’s record of 6-2 and senior Petra Niedermayerova’s mark of 6-3. Niedermayerova will make her second career appearance at the ASU Fall Invitational and her first since her freshman season.
Niedermayerova, ranked No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, owns the school record for career singles wins with an 86-36 (.705) mark. Her career singles winning percentage of .705 ranks second in school history. She is 71-21 (.772) in matches decided in two sets.
Head coach Steve Bietau will look for his team to build momentum in doubles play heading into the spring 2014 schedule. The Wildcats are currently 8-13 as a team in doubles. The duo of junior Amina St. Hill and freshman Palma Juhasz is K-State’s lone unbeaten doubles team at 3-0.
K-State will open its spring 2014 regular season schedule Jan. 24-25 in Athens, Ga., as part of the ITA Kick-off Weekend. The Wildcats will face Arkansas on Jan. 24 and then will play either Georgia or Elon. K-State’s 2014 spring schedule features 10 matches in Manhattan, beginning Jan. 31.
