Recap |  Box Score

Head coach Suzie Fritz

On what sparked the team between the first and second sets…

“I got after them a little bit after game one, and just said, ‘Hey, we here to compete. We have a great opportunity to play against a great team and see what we got, and we are not stepping up.’ They responded really well to that. They came out in the second set with more enthusiasm and energy.”

On what went well…

“We had decent balance on offense. Our passing was pretty consistent throughout the match. Our serving was effective as it took away some things [Cal] wanted to do.”

On how the team responded to the first set loss…

“We were kind of sitting back and waiting for things to happen instead of attacking [in the first set]. Sometimes when you get off to a slow start, it is hard to get the momentum going again. Their approach starting in game two was much different than game one.”

On Tristan McCarty…

“She does so much for us in serve/receive. She gets us organized and stabilizes us in regards to getting us in good situations for side outs. She has strong leadership skills, so I am thrilled she was recognized for All-Tournament.”

On Kaitlynn Pelger…

“Kaitlynn [Pelger] always steps up. When she knows it is time to win matches, you are glad she’s on your team. She will find a way. It is not just her attacking. Her blocking was good, her defense was great, her passing was terrific. She does so much for us.”

On using Lilla Porubek in the fifth set…

“Our depth is a strength for us. When it comes to that point in the match, you have to take your chances with your most experienced players.”

On overall thoughts of the game…

“We had a different people stepping up at different times and this was truly a team effort.”

Senior libero Tristan McCarty

On team motto, “Breathe, believe, battle” motivated them to the finish…

“After our first match, we had to breathe a little bit because it went a little fast on us. In the second match, we believed a little more in ourselves. And today, we had to battle a little bit against a really good team. We have to keep ourselves in the moment and remind each other, ‘breathe, believe, battle.’”

On what she is most proud about in the tournament…

“We are most proud when we can walk away from here and say we played well. The winning will come, but we need to keep getting better. The way we work together and capitalize makes us feel good and play well.”

On the greatest strength of this team…

“One of our greatest strengths is our depth. We can put someone in and everything stays pretty consistent. Everyone works really well together. When someone new comes in, we have confidence in that player in being able to pick up the team.”
