Box Score K-State Athletics

AUSTIN, Texas - For the second time this season, the K-State volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 1 Texas as the Wildcats lost 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 to the Longhorns on Saturday in Gregory Gym. The Wildcats dropped to 17-10 and 5-9 in the Big 12.

K-State was unable to contain Texas, the Big 12's top offense, and its .379 hitting percentage for the match. The Longhorns had just 11 attack errors throughout the night, and hit over .300 in each set - including a .441 clip in the third set.

Chelsea Keating and Kaitlynn Pelger led the Wildcats in kills with eight apiece. Taylor Johnson had seven kills on a .312 hitting percentage. Pelger also paced the team with eight digs.

Katie Brand had 28 assists to go along with her five kills, five digs and an ace. The five kills for Brand were her most in a match since tallying six against Texas at home on Oct. 26.

Courtney Traxson had a team-high three blocks to go along with her six kills and three digs. The Wildcats had four blocks to the Longhorns' 8.5

The Wildcats remain winless (0-7) in Big 12 road matches this season and are 4-7 overall on the road.

Texas established a 14-7 lead in the opening set, but Johnson's second kill of the match sparked a 5-2 run to bring the Wildcats within 16-12.

K-State faced set point, 24-16, but it rattled off four straight points to bring the Wildcats within four points once again. Brand dropped in her only ace to make it 24-19 before Johnson powered down a kill on a Texas over-pass to make it 24-20. The Longhorns clinched the opening set, though, on a K-State service error.

The second set, which featured 15 ties and five lead changes, was tight-knit. The Wildcats and Longhorns would not allow either side to pull away any further than two points in the first two-thirds of the set. K-State was down 13-12, but a service error and attack error by Texas coming out of a Wildcats timeout gave K-State a 14-13 lead.

Brand had a dump kill, her fourth kill of the match, to even the score at 18-18. Texas, however, closed out the set with a 7-1 run. The run was the first time Texas put together consecutive points since they tied it at 5-5 on back-to-back points earlier in the second. The Wildcats had a service error and two attack errors to help feed the Longhorns run.

Back-to-back kills by Texas' Bailey Webster helped the Longhorns build a 6-2 lead in the early going of the third set. A Texas attack error made it 7-4 Longhorns, but Texas went on an 8-1 run to build an insurmountable lead.

The defeat extended K-State's losing streak against Texas to 21 matches. Texas clinched the Big 12 title outright with Saturday's win.

K-State will wrap up its road slate for the 2013 regular season with a match at TCU on Wednesday, November 27. The match is set for 6:30 pm.
