MANHATTAN, Kan. – Former Kansas State volleyball player Caitlyn Donahue has been taking advantage of her opportunity to train with USA Volleyball this summer. After receiving a personal invitation from head coach Karch Kiraly, Donahue has been putting up good numbers and even leading the setters in some scrimmages.

In a scrimmage on May 24, Donahue was the top setter with 27 assists in three sets of action and added two kills plus a block. That Red-Blue Scrimmage went five sets with players switching sides to create multiple lineup options and roster combinations for the coaching staff to evaluate the players.

That performance by Donahue followed the first scrimmage that saw her post 21 assists. Stats for Donahue from last week’s scrimmage were not available.

After Donahue made the initial cut to continue working out with USA Volleyball following the initial scrimmage, K-State coach Suzie Fritz said Donahue has performed well and is worthy of the opportunity to train with the nation’s top players.

“I believe the coaches see Caitlyn’s future potential. In the national team program, they are not just looking for players that can impact them immediately, but players that have the potential to impact them in years and Olympic cycles to come,” Fritz said. “Caitlyn is relatively inexperienced as a setter, in that she didn’t begin playing the position until she got to us here at K-State. She will have the opportunity to now train for roster positions for international competitions throughout the summer and fall. We continue to be exceptionally proud of her and how she represents our program and Kansas State University.”

Donahue was one of six setters invited to participate in USA Volleyball’s summer training session as Team USA prepares for the Pan American Cup in Lima, Peru on June 10-16. The next Red-Blue Scrimmage will be held June 21 in San Diego. That match will lead into the USA Volleyball Cup in July.
