MANHATTAN, Kan. – Volleyball fans will get their first look at the 2012 K-State Wildcats on Saturday with the annual Purple/White Scrimmage at Ahearn Field House. The Wildcats will scrimmage at 7 p.m. Saturday to close out training camp as the team prepares for another successful season.

The team has been holding two-a-days for more than a week now, and the Wildcats are seeing improvements in a number of areas. Head Coach Suzie Fritz said the level of commitment from her team this season is clearly visible in practice and she is looking forward to the scrimmage.

“I don’ think we could ask for more in regards to the character and work ethic of our kids. They give us everything they’ve got. They max out every day,” Fritz said. “That might have been something we already knew about them, but they continue to do it. There is no complacency with them whatsoever.”

K-State returns every starter from last year’s squad that reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals and finished the year ranked No. 22 in the AVCA Coaches Poll. This year’s team will open the season ranked No. 22 as the coaches selected the Wildcats there for the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.

Fritz said her team has worked hard throughout training camp and she wants the fans to see the evidence on the court by coming to the Purple/White Scrimmage and to the matches again this season. K-State ranked No. 24 in national attendance last year.

“I know how hard our team has worked and I know the amount of time and effort and energy they have put into getting better, and I want everybody else to see it, too,” Fritz said. “The games are part of our celebration of the day to day grind. There’s a lot of work that goes into it before they flip the lights on. I want them to feel like they can come and celebrate that with us. I think we’ve got a team that you’re going to want to see, and I think they’re going to keep getting better as the season goes.”

First serve for the Purple/White Scrimmage will be at 7 p.m. and is free to attend.

Volleyball Media Day will also be held on Saturday. The team will hold a serve/pass practice that will be open to media from 2:15-3 p.m. Interviews and other photo needs will follow practice from 3-3:45 p.m. and will be concluded in time to not conflict with media wishing to cover the K-State Fall Football Kickoff and open practice at Bill Snyder Family Stadium at 5 p.m. as well as the Purple/White Scrimmage at 7 p.m. at Ahearn Field House.

K-State opens the 2012 season at home when the Wildcats will host the Varney’s K-State Invitational on August 24-25. The Wildcats will play host to UC Irvine, Oakland and Oregon State over the two days. Tickets remain on sale through the K-State Ticket Office. The ticket office is offering a Wildcat 4 Pack for the match against Oakland on August 25 that includes four general admission tickets and four concession vouchers for a hotdog, chips and drink for only $30.
