GO WILDCATS

Aug 22, 2013

The following quotes were taken after the annual Purple/White Scrimmage at Ahearn Field House on Thursday, August 22, 2013.

Head Coach Suzie Fritz
On what the team is focused on improving …

“It is still early. We have been at it for two weeks so the list of improvements is still pretty long. Tonight, we were trying to attack two primary areas: first-swing offense and trying to do a nice job of managing first contact in terms of serving and receiving. We saw some nice things tonight. We limited our errors in serving and receiving. We did not miss a ton a serves and we did not have a lot of receiving errors, which is something that we think we are improving on and that is getting better and better. First-swing offense is still a work in progress, somewhat just because we have different personnel at different positions. Our setter (Katie Brand) is a redshirt freshman, so this is the first time that she has had to be in charge in that aspect but she has done a tremendous job and is learning fast.”

On the team’s current outlook…

“Emotionally, we are ready to play somebody else because you get tired of beating up on each other. Preseason is tough; you are practicing multiple times a day, the player’s bodies are fatigued. It is just tough, so I think they are ready to start winding down a little bit and are ready to start focusing on a different outcome and having some challenges from somebody else.”

On the team’s performance …

“They are still experiencing ups and downs. We are demanding a lot from them and I think they are trying to give us everything they have and we are trying to wring them out. We are trying to pull out more, so I think they have been committed, incredibly coachable and I think they are buying into the things that we are asking them to do and that is a really good start.”

Redshirt Freshman Setter Katie Brand
On  being in a game setting tonight…

“We were split up pretty even. I think [heading to Las Vegas] is what I am really excited for there is to have the starting team on the floor and to really start clicking with them. As of right now, I thought it was really cool to go out there and play and it helps that we are playing really well too.”

On improvements needed…

“Right now, we are really working on our offense and that was the key for us tonight. During our last scrimmage we really worked on defense, so tonight was about our offense. For this team, we really need to grow on offense and I thought tonight we showed great improvements.”

On the positives from the scrimmage…

“For the goals that the coaches set for us tonight, I thought we met a lot of them. I think that is really positive for us.”

Senior Middle Blocker Kaitlynn Pelger

On the heat…

“I think that it just fatigues us a little faster. It really has not been that hot in Ahearn the first two weeks of two-a-days, but now it is getting hotter. It just kind of wore on us a little bit. We stayed strong and worked hard the whole time.”

On the team’s improvements…

“We worked on offense the entire week and I think we did exactly what we needed to do tonight. We will go in and watch film tomorrow and make sure that we were doing it right and have the coaches get out the kinks and tell us what we need to do better.”

On going to Las Vegas…

“It is so exciting going to Las Vegas. It is a crazy town and we are ready for some crazy games. We are ready to put all of the work that we did over the summer to action.”
