MANHATTAN, Kan. – After winning the Golden Hurricane Classic and defeating two ranked teams in the process this weekend, the K-State volleyball team has climbed eight spots in the latest AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll to No. 11. The Wildcats were the big movers this week in the poll and it marks the highest ranking for K-State since being ranked No. 11 on Nov. 26, 2007.
The Wildcats swept hosting Tulsa at the tournament on Thursday evening followed with a dramatic 3-2 win over then-No. 10 Minnesota on Friday afternoon. K-State closed the tournament with a sweep of then-ranked No. 20 Dayton that saw the team hit .352 overall highlighted by Kaitlynn Pelger’s .654 hitting percentage with 19 kills.
At the Golden Hurricane Classic, Pelger earned tournament MVP and was joined on the Golden Hurricane Classic All-Tournament Team by Kathleen Ludwig and Caitlyn Donahue.
Three Big 12 teams continue to be ranked as Texas drops three spots to No. 9 after losing to then-No. 23 Illinois at home last week. Iowa State jumps from No. 25 to No. 19 after upsetting No. 1 Nebraska in Ames on Saturday in five sets. Oklahoma remains among the teams listed as receiving votes.
Minnesota and Dayton are still ranked with the Golden Gophers dropping two spots to No. 12 and Dayton falling to No. 22. Two more of K-State’s nonconference opponents are receiving votes. Oregon State is just outside the Top 25 as the leading vote getter with 63 points in the poll. Creighton also is receiving votes with 34 points.
