For the second straight year, the K-State volleyball team has turned in one of the best starts to a season in program history. The Wildcats enter their Big 12 opener at West Virginia this Friday, September 27 with a 12-1 record, which only trails last year's 12-0 start for the best since head coach Suzie Fritz took over the program in 2001.

Of its 12 wins, K-State has four road victories against nonconference opponents, the most by the program in 25 years. The road triumphs include at UNLV, then-#23 Cal, Arkansas and Missouri State. Two of the wins (Arkansas, Missouri State) were sweeps while the other two (UNLV, Cal) were five-set victories.

All that was preseason, though, and Fritz is not going to let her team fall back on early season success.

"Our focus has literally shifted very quickly away from the preseason," said Fritz. "It is now time to look towards the first half of the Big 12, knowing where we have to be and where we have to go.

"Now we want to add elements into our offense so that we can be less predictable. We still need to be a more terminal sideout team. I think that is something that we have grown a lot in the last three weeks of preseason in that we are working in more productive ways."

The Wildcats are 2-0 all-time against West Virginia, with both victories occurring last season, the first campaign in which the Mountaineers were a part of the Big 12 conference.

West Virginia enters Friday's match with a 13-1 record. The Mountaineers' attack is led by freshman outside hitter Jordan Anderson. The Flower Mound, Texas native leads the team with 4.05 kills per set. Anderson has twice been named Big 12 Rookie of the Week this season.

The match can heard live online on K-StateHD.TV.

Notes: K-State is in prime position to crack the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll soon. The Wildcats received 78 points in this week's poll, which are the 26th-most. Illinois (4-6) and the Big 12's Iowa State (6-4) are 24th and 25th with 144 and 96 points, respectively ... For the second week in a row, a K-State player received a weekly award from the Big 12. Senior middle blocker Kaitlynn Pelger was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week, her first such award of her career. Redshirt freshman Katie Brand was named Rookie of the Week last week ... The Wildcats are atop the Big 12 leaderboard in blocks per set with 2.81. That average is also 14th-best in NCAA Division I entering the week.
