Willie the Wildcat
Willie, a student bedecked in a oversized Wildcat head, is K-State’s No. 1 fan. Willie Wildcats are selected yearly by a panel appointed by the cheerleader coach. The mascot is a central part of athletic contests and attends functions around the state as an ambassador. Traditionally, the identity of the student portraying Willie is kept secret. Entertaining Wildcat fans of all ages, Willie the Wildcat has become a well-recognized icon of Kansas State University both in the Manhattan community and across the United States. Tryouts: Selection for the mascots are in late April in conjunction with the cheer squad tryouts. Selected based on performing a comedy skit using creativity and enthusiasm, with the ability to entertain. One varsity and one junior varsity Willie are selected. Current K-State students must attach a current unofficial transcript to the spirit squad application, showing a semester and cumulative 2.0 GPA. Transfer students and incoming freshman must attach a current transcript to the spirit squad application, showing a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Duties: Attendance at summer camp is mandatory. Perform at tailgate and parking lot functions and events for home football games. Perform skit during pre-game shows for football and basketball games. Perform during all football games (home and away); bowl game; women's and men's home basketball games; home volleyball games; and any away tournaments. Appear at numerous events (both University and non-University related) throughout the year, which may include traveling. Requirements: Must be enrolled in 12 credit hours per semester (both fall and spring) and maintain 2.0 GPA, semester (regular session, excluding intersession course) and cumulative. Skills: Must possess the ability to get people involved using body language skills. Must also be able to get in front of a crowd and entertain to create enthusiasm in good taste. Must be very outgoing, creative, and humorous. Must be in good physical condition with a great deal of stamina.
Liability: Each participant must have medical insurance and must sign a medical form. Once selected for the squad, members will need to obtain a physical. Uniform: Uniform is provided, but at the responsibility of the participants to keep it clean and in good condition. Willie head may require minor repairs periodically. Willie head must remain in an enclosed sack while not in use. Participants are to remain confidential of their identity. Scholarships: Available for varsity Willie, if maintaining 2.5 GPA. Benefits: Unlimited use of Recreation Center; athletic trainer provided; letter jacket and powercat wrist watch for varsity Willie after completing one full year; all travel expenses for away games and events, including camp are paid on behalf of the athletic department; and any costumes/props necessary are provided at no out of pocket expense on behalf of the athletic department. |
