Varsity Cheer Squad



K-State's coed varsity cheer squad is comprised of no more than 16 members (equal number of males and females).

2002-2003 Tryout Information

Tryouts: Members are selected from tryouts each year by a panel of 6-8 judges. Tryouts for cheer squad are in late April and in late August if positions are available. Current K-State students must attach a current unofficial transcript to the spirit squad application, showing a semester and cumulative 2.0 GPA. Transfer students and incoming freshman must attach a current transcript to the spirit squad application, showing a cumulative 2.5 GPA.

Practices: Monday through Friday evenings starting the first day of fall semester classes from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Two evenings during the week consist of conditioning/toning.

Duties: Attendance at summer camp and several summer practices are mandatory. Cheer for all football games (home and away); bowl game; and men's home basketball games and away tournaments. Spirit through parking lot on football game day and game day functions. Perform/appear at numerous events (University and non-University related) throughout the year, which may include traveling. If qualified, may compete in a National Competition.

Requirements: Must be enrolled in 12 credit hours per semester (both fall and spring) and maintain 2.0 GPA, semester (regular session, excluding intersession course) and cumulative.

Skills: Running and standing tumbling (round-off, back handspring, back tuck); jumps (toe touch, herkie, hurdler); dancing; coed partner stunting and pyramid building; motion technique (cheers and chants); and beaming personality, enthusiastic attitude, team mentality, hard work ethic and SMILE.



Liability: Each participant must have medical insurance and must sign a medical form. Once selected for the squad, members will need to obtain a physical.

Uniform: Uniform is provided, but at the responsibility of the participants to keep it in good condition and to return it clean at the end of the year along with poms and megaphones. Camp outfits (shorts and t-shirts), shoes, warm-ups, and coats are furnished by the athletic department and are for the member to keep.

Scholarships: Eligible if maintaining a 2.5 GPA. Amount may vary per member, based on several factors, ie. commitment, seniority, level of ability, attitude, etc., according to the coaches discretion.

Benefits: Unlimited use of Recreation Center; athletic trainer provided; letter jacket after completing one full year on varsity squad; one male and one female captain receives powercat wrist watches; free admittance to women's basketball games and volleyball games; all travel expenses for away events, including camp are paid on behalf of the athletic department; and all uniforms provided at no out of pocket expense on behalf of the athletic department.
