Terrell Smith’s School Record Highlights Day One of Razorback Invitational
Jan 26, 2018 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior Terrell Smith highlighted an impressive day one of the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday, as he set a new school record in the men's 200-meters, running a time of 20.90 to best the previous record (20.93) he set in 2016.
Smith's historic feat comes at the same facility that he broke the record at in 2016, the Randal Tyson Track Center. Smith, a native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, currently holds the seventh fastest 200-meter time in the nation, and the third fastest in the Big 12 this season.
"Terrell [Smith] ran faster, but frankly we both think that there is still some more [improvement] there," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "Mitch [Dixon] had a personal best and competes well, and the weight throw ladies also threw well."
After one day of action at the Razorback Invitational, the No. 24 ranked K-State women place third with 34 points, behind only No. 2 Arkansas (58 points) and No. 3 Georgia (54 points), while the men stand in second with 32.5 points, behind only No. 3 Texas A&M (41.5 points).
In the meets leading up to Friday's action, senior Mitch Dixon has consistently improved upon his personal bests in the men's weight throw by upping his career-marks in each of the five meets this season. At the Razorback Invitational on Friday, Dixon set the precedent again on his fourth attempt, throwing a career-best 21.36m/70-01 to win the event. The senior has won every weight throw competition to this point this season, and currently stands second on the K-State all-time men's weight throw list, and second in the Big 12 this season.
In the women's weight throw competition, the impressive marks continued as all three K-State throwers matched or bested their career best throw. Sophomore Helene Ingvaldsen surpassed the 21-meter mark with a throw of 21.20m/69-06.75 to move into third in K-State history in the event. Ingvaldsen is nearing closer to teammate Janee' Kassanavoid who holds the school record of 21.81m/71-06.75 in the event.
Friday also marked the first time K-State competed in the distance medley relay this season, as the women's team consisting of Erin Lee, Keiteyana Parks, Cayli Hume and Sydney Collins finished third in the event in 11:59.67.
The last event of the day was in the men's high jump competition, where freshman Tejaswin Shankar and junior Nate Gipson battled the high jump bar. Shankar was one of four individuals in the event to make it to 2.22m/7-03.25, though he was unable to clear the height as he finished fourth with a top jump of 2.19m/7-02.25, good for a new personal best in the event. Gipson finished seventh overall with a clearance of 2.16m/7-01.
"TJ [Tejaswin Shankar] had an indoor personal best today, and he is getting better, and Nate [Gipson] is making progress," Rovelto said of the men's high jumpers.
Friday's action serves as a prelude for an exciting second day, as K-State returns to the Randal Tyson Track center on Saturday, beginning at 11:10 a.m. with the men's 3,000-meter run. The Razorback Invitational will be available for live stream on SECN+ and WatchESPN here.
