K-State Track Teams Place Fifth at Prestigious Razorback Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The K-State Track and Field teams accounted for four event victories and and several top marks in the conference en route to both the men's and women's teams finishing fifth among tough competition at the Razorback Invitational held at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Saturday.
The No. 24 ranked Wildcat women scored 53 points to finish behind only No. 2 Arkansas (118 points), No. 4 USC (82 points), No. 3 Georgia (81 points), and No. 9 LSU (53.5 points), while the men's team finished fifth with 56.5 points to fend off No. 7 Arkansas (45 points) and No. 13 USC (47 points) among others.
"As far as the overall team performance I thought we were pretty competitive," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said of the team's performance. "In a competition like this, those who score points are having to perform at a fairly high level, so those clearly are the performance that stand out."
On the second day of competition, senior Colton Donahue and junior Emma Wren claimed titles in the respective distance events. Donahue, a senior from Stilwell, Kan., ran a 8:17.06 in the men's open 3,000-meters, a new career-best and the third best mark in the Big 12 conference this season.
Wren took the second event victory for the Wildcats in the women's open mile run, where she ran the eight laps around the Randal Tyson track in 4:53.38. Wren's effort bested her previous personal best of 4:54.25 set at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular earlier this year and ranks 12th in the Big 12 this season.
Also, in the distance events, freshman Cara Melgares sliced over 10 seconds off her personal best from earlier this year, as she ran in a competitive women's 3,000-meters race, finishing in fourth in 9:59.97.
After a historic performance on Friday, in which he broke his own school record in the men's 200-meters, senior Terrell Smith put together another notable performance in the men's 60 meters, placing third in 6.74 in the preliminary round to qualify for the finals. Fellow Wildcat sprinter, sophomore Jullane Walker also qualified for the final event, registering a time of 6.79 in the preliminary round.
In the 60-meter finals, Smith and Walker sprinted down the straight-away to finish third and fifth, respectively. Smith's mark in the 60-meters currently ranks 25th in the NCAA this season, while Walker also improved upon his preliminary time, finishing in 6.78. Walker's new personal best moved him into ninth in K-State 60-meter indoor history.
The personal bests continued into the men's 400 meters, where sophomore Justin Davis improved upon his 49.20 set at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational last week. Davis ran his second personal best of the season on Saturday, finishing the 400 in 48.94.
In the field events, junior Brett Neelly and freshman Kyle Mitchell represented K-State in the men's shot put, where Neelly claimed third place behind a best throw of 18.71m/61-04.75. Mitchell finished sixth overall after throwing a new personal best 17.36m/56-11.50.
The triple jump duo of Shadae Lawrence and Konstantina Romaiou accounted for 13 of the Wildcat points in the women's triple jump, as Lawrence placed third in the event with a top jump of 13.08m/42-11 and Romaiou finished fourth with a new personal best of 12.90m/42-04. With her mark on Saturday, Romaiou has registered the 16th best jump in the NCAA this season, while Lawrence holds the ninth best with her jump of 13.09m/42-11.50 set at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational last weekend.
The Wildcats will return home to Ahearn Fieldhouse to start the February slate of competition, as they host the DeLoss Dodds Invitational from February 2-3. The DeLoss Dodds Invitational marks the fifth of six indoor home meets this season, as they prepare for the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa from February 23-24.
