Cari Jensen Named to Academic All-America First Team

Dec 05, 2003 | General

Manhattan - Kansas State’s Cari Jensen was named to the 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-America Volleyball First Team in a vote of the nation’s College Sports Information Directors, the organization announced Friday.

Jensen becomes the program’s first-ever first team selection and the first volleyball player to ever earn two Academic All-America selections. Jensen was named to the All-America Third Team last season. Besides Jensen’s two all-America selections, the volleyball program’s only other selection on the academic team was Jennifer Koehn, a third team pick, back in 1982.

A 2002 First Team All-Big 12 selection, Jensen is currently seventh all-time at Kansas State in attacks with 3,124, 10th all-time in kills with 1,163 and is seventh in kills per game ratio with a 3.33 average. Jensen has totalled 25 double-doubles in her career and has collected 10 or more kills in 62 matches. Jensen is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and two-time Academic All-District selection.

A three-time Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week, Jensen has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll all six semesters at K-State and currently has a 3.94 GPA in kinesiology and Pre-Health Professions.

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom.  Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.  Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Jensen and the sixth-ranked Wildcats host Ohio Friday in NCAA First Round action. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. at Ahearn Field House.
