Walker, Johnson Tabbed Big 12 Athletes of the Week

Jan 15, 2020 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State track and field runners Jullane Walker and Kassidy Johnson both received Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors for their performances over the weekend in the 60 meter race and the mile run during the Jim Green invitational back on January 10-11 in Lexington, Kentucky, the conference announced today.

"I thought both Jullane and Kassidy had great performances at Kentucky," said Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "Jullane has great competition while Kassidy's effort was pretty much solo. Both are certainly on the right track."

Walker, a Kingston, Jamaica native, posted a personal record during the 60-meter dash at a scorching time of 6.66 in the final round of the event, placing third amongst all competitors inside Nutter Field House. The senior sprinter currently holds the fourth fastest time in the nation for the event.

Johnson, a native of Wichita, Kansas, ran a 4:48.00 mile to clinch the victory on Saturday afternoon, outpacing the next competitor by over five seconds. Johnson's pace in the mile competition puts her at the top of the Big 12 standings in the event through three meets in the 2019-20 season.

Both Walker and Johnson climbed up the indoor top-10 leaderboards for K-State history after their performances with Walker bumping himself up to No. 3 for the 60-meter dash while Johnson secured a spot at No. 8 for the mile event.

This is the first athlete of the week awards for the pair in their careers at K-State. The last time any Wildcat notched a Big 12 Athlete of the Week award in the indoor campaign was back on February 6, 2019, when sophomore Alex Ferguson won the award after posting a first-place finish in the 600-meter race at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.

K-State travels to Wichita, Kansas for the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular on Saturday, January 18. This is the second road meet of the season for the Wildcats.
