Wildcats Duo Chogsomjav, Santos Advance to ITA Semifinals

The pair secured two wins in the round of 16 and quarterfinal rounds
The K-State women's tennis team competed in the ITA Central Regional Championship on Saturday (Oct. 12) highlighted by sophomore Maralgoo Chogsomjav and junior Maria Santos moving on to the doubles semifinal round.

Chogsomjav and Santos defeated two teams in 8 game pro sets in the morning, starting with Gloriana Nahum and Chloe Noel from Oklahoma in a tiebreaker battle. The pair came from behind to become victorious at 8-7 (7-5).

Moving on to the quarterfinal round, the duo faced Tulsa's Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez, winning 8-6.

Advancing to the doubles semifinal round, Chogsomjav and Santos will face the Hurricane's Maria Berlanga and Lily Hutchings on Sunday (Oct. 13) at 9 a.m. CT.

Senior Veronika Kulhava and sophomore Tereza Polakova also competed in the doubles round of 16 in the morning, falling short to the Sooners' Cara Mester and Alina Shcherbinina 8-5.

In the afternoon, four Wildcats competed in extra singles matches, three of them battling into three sets.

Kulhava captured the lone singles win, sweeping Arkansas' Katarina Pavlechova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Chogsomjav hit the courts for the third time in the day, facing Velasquez again. She won the first set and battled into a high scoring third set but couldn't secure the lead, falling short 6-2, 4-6, 14-16.

Sophomore Zali Morris competed with Minnesota's Aiva Schmitz, splitting the first two sets before falling in the third 6-2, 3-6, 5-10. Junior Sana Garakani was back in singles play, this time against Erin McKenzie from Tulsa. Garakani forced a third set after winning the second 6-3, but she could not keep the momentum, losing in a similar fashion to Morris, 5-7, 6-3, 5-10.
