Mike Furlong enters his seventh season with the K-State men’s basketball program in 2021-22, including his third as director of student-athlete development, after stints as a graduate student manager (2015-17) and video coordinator (2017-19).
 
During his time on the coaching staff, Furlong has helped the Wildcats post 108 wins, including back-to-back 25-win campaigns to go with three NCAA Tournament appearances. The school was one of 24 programs nationally, including 15 in power conferences, with 25-win seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
 
In his position as the director of student-athlete development, Furlong is responsible for a variety of areas, including basketball-related matters, handling special projects for the staff and assisting with community service projects and the Life Skills program. He is also involved in the student-athlete’s academic development and counseling each in career planning and goal setting.
 
The past two seasons, Furlong has helped six players earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, including First Team selections Kaosi Ezeagu and Joe Petrakis in 2020-21, while players have combined for 34 selections to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Rolls in the last four semesters. Senior Mike McGuirl completed his bachelor’s degree in May 2021 and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at K-State, extending a streak of every student-athlete (28) finishing their eligibility earning their degree during Bruce Weber’s tenure as head coach.
 
As a graduate assistant from 2015-17, Furlong helped with the initial breakdown of game video, aided in scouting opponents and coordinated film exchange with then video coordinator Dustin Yoder.
 
A native of Livonia, Michigan, Furlong concluded his playing career at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan in 2015, where he lettered four years for head coach John Tharp. He helped the Chargers to a 72-38 record during his career, including a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season title in 2011-12. He served as a team captain as a senior in 2014-15, while he was “Teammate of the Year” in both 2014 and 2015.
 
Furlong earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing management from Hillsdale in June 2015, while he received his Master’s degree in Academic Advising from Kansas State in 2017.
 
Furlong and his wife, Kim, were married in June 2021. His wife, Kim, is a former student-athlete and academic counselor at K-State and is the current football and rowing academic counselor at USC.
