Tom Asbury
- Title:
- Head Coach
Tom Asbury continued the rich tradition of Kansas State basketball, guiding the Wildcats to 85 wins from 1994 to 2000 to go with three postseason appearances, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1996.
Asbury was hired after an impressive six-year stint at Pepperdine, where he guided the Waves to 125-59 (.679) record from 1989-94 and three West Coast Conference regularseason and tournament titles. He also led the Waves to five trips to the postseason, including three NCAA Tournaments (1991, 1992 and 1994). He was also named the West Coast Conference (WCC) Coach of the Year following the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons.
Known for developing tough defensive teams, Asbury guided K-State to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons in just his second season at the helm, as his 1995-96 squad advanced to the East Region where they lost to No. 23 New Mexico.
Asbury helped the team to back-to-back trips to the Postseason NIT in 1997-98 and 1998-99. His 1998-99 team led the nation in field goal percentage defense, as the Wildcats held opponents to just 37.1 percent shooting from the field. That squad posted the 19th 20-win season in school history and the first in five years.
Upon leaving K-State, Asbury entered private business before returning to bench as an assistant coach to Mark Gottfried at Alabama from 2003-07. After a brief retirement, he returned to the sidelines in 2008 for his second stint at Pepperdine, guiding the Waves for three seasons (2008-10) before retiring for good in 2010. He concluded his career with a 242-212 (.533) record in 15 seasons at Pepperdine (1988-94; 2008-10) and K-State (1994-2000).
