IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Luke Recker scored 20 of his 29 points in the firsthalf and No. 12 Iowa held off a second-half rally by Kansas State for a 89-70victory on Saturday night.

Kansas State (5-5) cut a 16-point lead to one less than six minutes into thesecond half before Iowa (10-3) regained control with the help of its reserves.

Recker was the only Iowa starter on the floor when Kansas State pulled to56-55 on Larry Reid's free throw with 14:24 left. But the Hawkeyes tightenedtheir defense and got key 3-pointers from Chauncey Leslie and Ryan Hogan torebuild their lead.

Glen Worley's two free throws made it 58-55 and, after Scott Sonderleiterblocked a shot at the other end, Leslie made a 3-pointer from the right cornerfor a 61-55 lead.

Another 3 by Leslie increased the lead to 64-57 and Hogan's 3-pointer, whichfollowed a layup by Leslie, put Iowa ahead 71-60 with 10:21 left.

Kansas State drew to 73-65 on Travis Reynolds' jump hook but got no closer.Recker hit two free throws to start a 6-0 run and Iowa went on to outscoreKansas State 16-5 the rest of the way.

Reggie Evans added 18 points for Iowa despite sitting out much of the secondhalf because of fouls. Worley had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Leslie finishedwith 10 points and five assists.

Pervis Pasco led Kansas State with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Reid scored 12but made only 3-of-12 shots. He scored 31 in an upset of Iowa last year.

Kansas State trailed 45-29 with less than a minute to play in the first halfbefore Reid scored the final five points of the half to cut the lead to 11. TheWildcats then started breaking down Iowa's defense to get close-in shots ordraw fouls and rallied.

Pasco scored nine points in the first 3:05 of the second half as KansasState cut the lead to 52-47. Nick Williams converted a three-point play off asteal to draw the Wildcats to 54-52 and Evans went to the bench with his fourthfoul at the 15:26 mark.

A minute later, Reid's free throw made it a one-point game.

Iowa scored the first seven points and never trailed. A 12-3 run sent thelead to 26-10, a burst that started with a five-point possession resulting froma technical foul against Kansas State coach Jim Wooldridge.

Recker made the two free throws, then sank a 3-pointer 19 seconds later.

Evans' two free throws stretched the lead to 45-29 with a 1:03 left in thehalf and the Hawkeyes seemed to be in control. But Reid closed the half with a3-pointer and a driving shot, and the Wildcats carried that momentum into thesecond half.
