The recent court settlement in the House vs. NCAA class action lawsuit, which allows athletics departments to share revenues with student-athletes for use of their name, image, and likeness, signals a transformative era in college athletics. Beyond revenue sharing, the settlement will also provide new scholarship opportunities, as well as changes to roster limits. This historic settlement will have a monumental impact on college athletics, leveling the NIL playing field by creating a new structure with a uniform spending cap across all Power 4 institutions.

FAQs

What is the difference between revenue share money and NIL?
In this new era of college athletics, the commonly used term "NIL" can be broken down into two different forms:

  • Revenue Sharing: Payments to student-athletes directly by the athletic department for the use of the student-athletes' name, image and likeness for promotion of the university and athletic programs.
  • NIL: True, 3rd party agreements with student-athlete and businesses for the use of the student-athletes' name, image and likeness in an advertising campaign, personal appearances, social media collaboration or similar promotional opportunities. These agreements are subject to review and approval by the Collegiate Sports Commission to ensure deals have a valid business purpose and are within the range of compensation for that purpose.
Where does the revenue sharing money come from?
It will take all of us! Your support, along with K-State Athletics' continued efforts to identify new revenue streams and evaluate current operations, will propel us into this new era. Though revenue sharing begins at $20.5 millions in year one, that number will grow by 4% each year while being recalculated every three years. This signifies a growing commitment to competing at the highest-level year after year. The NCAA does not provide additional funds to schools for these purposes.

What does this mean for K-State?
Through the unparalleled support of recent capital campaigns, K-State has elite facilities across our athletic campus putting us in a very advantageous position as we enter this new era. Because of that, our primary focus can be solely on the competitive advantage of fully funding revenue sharing to the cap and securing our student-athletes with third party NIL opportunities with interested businesses.

Will this guarantee wins?
We are at a crossroads, but the future is bright for K-State to be on the forefront of this new era. Committing to fully funding up to the revenue share cap, as K-State has, is the new standard to remain competitive on a national landscape. This will allow us to continue to recruit and retain elite talent and top caliber individuals to represent the purple and the white.
