Kansas State-Colorado Postgame Notes...
*Kansas State started Larry Reid and Nick Williams at the guard positions and juniors Matt Siebrandt, Quentin Buchanan, and Pervis Pasco at the forward slots... It marked the fourth straight contest the Wildcats have used that lineup... Pasco is the only Wildcat to start all 16 games this season.
*Colorado, which shot 49.3 percent from the floor, became the first Big 12 team this season to out-shoot the Wildcats from the field.
*The Wildcats turned the ball over just nine times, their second lowest total of the season... K-State posted a season-low eight turnovers vs. North Texas (Dec. 15).
*K-State placed four players in double figures for the fourth straight game. Reid (13), Pasco (11), Phineas Atchison (11) and DeJesus (10) all hit double digits in scoring.
*Ivan Sulic, who collected a season-high four rebounds, played a career-high 21 minutes in the game.
*Reid posted a career-high four steals. He had registered his previous high of three steals eight times, including twice this season.
*Reid led the Wildcats in scoring for the third time in the last four games and the seventh time this season... He scored in double figures for the 12th time in his 15 games this year.
*Pasco, who posted 11 rebounds, led the Wildcats on the boards for the seventh straight game.
*Gilson DeJesus, who scored 10 points, posted his third double-figure scoring game of the season.
MIssouri At-A-Glance...
*The Tigers, who lost 84-71 at No. 6 Oklahoma on Monday, opened the season by winning their first nine games before dropping three straight contests. Since then, however, Mizzou has won five of seven and is 4-2 in the Big 12, good for sole possession of fourth place.
*A consensus preseason All-American selection, Kareem Rush leads the Tigers in scoring with an 19.2 point-per-game average (second in the Big 12). Rush is also shooting 41.8 percent from beyond the three-point line and grabbing 4.7 boards a game, second on the team. Three other Tigers score in double figures: Clarence Gilbert (16.5 ppg), Arthur Johnson (11.8) and Rickey Paulding (10.1). Johnson also leads MU in rebounding (8.5 pg).
*Head coach Quin Snyder is 52-31 (.627) in his third season at Missouri. Snyder has led the Tigers to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a second-round showing last season.
*Missouri ranks fourth in the Big 12 in scoring margin (+12.5) and three-point field-goal percentage (38.2). The Tigers are seventh in the league in rebounding margin (+5.3) and third in three-point field goals made (8.8 pg).
On the Defensive...
K-State has been steady at the defensive end throughout the season and its healthy defensive field goal percentage is one indication. The Wildcats are holding the opposition to just 39.0 percent from the field (second in the Big 12), despite allowing a season-high 49.2 percent by Colorado. The 'Cats held four of their first six opponents under 40 percent from the field, before Western Carolina (Dec. 19) and Iowa (Dec. 22) combined to shoot 45.5 percent (45 of 99) from the floor. The 'Cats rebounded to hold their next two opponents (Fairleigh Dickinson, Texas Tech) to 33.3 percent from the field, including a 27.3 percent effort from FDU. That marked the worst shooting performance by a K-State opponent since Coppin State shot 24.5 on Dec. 21, 1998. Missouri, however, shot 42.4 percent (28 of 66 FGs) from the floor on Jan. 12, but the 'Cats clamped down again, holding their next two opponents (Baylor and Iowa State) to 37.5 percent from the floor (39 of 104 FGs).
Key matchup...
Two of the top rebounders in the Big 12 Conference will be on the floor Saturday in the Hearnes Center. Pervis Pasco and Arthur Johnson rank three-four in the league, respectively, in rebounding. Pasco is averaging 8.8 rebounds a game while Johnson is collecting 8.5 boards a contest. Johnson has also collected seven double-doubles on the season, which ranks second in the Big 12. Pasco is right behind him with six.
What to Focus On...
*Missouri ranks seventh (+5.3) in the Big 12 in rebounding margin (+5.3), while the Wildcats are 10th (+1.8). However, MU controlled the boards in the first meeting (46-30) and held a 19-7 edge on the offensive glass.
*The Tigers are shooting 38.2 percent (fourth in the Big 12) from three-point land, while K-State is defending the arc well, holding opponents to 31.4 percent (third in the Big 12).
Kansas State-Missouri Series (KSU Leads 108-106)
*K-State's victory last January broke a Tiger two-game winning streak. Missouri has won five of the last eight games in the series.
*Prior to that 80-59 win on Jan. 16, 2001, the most recent Wildcat victory in the series, which dates back to 1907, was an 84-74 triumph over No. 24 Missouri in the quarterfinals of the 1999 Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.
*The Wildcats have dropped 16 straight to Missouri in Columbia. K-State's last win came in 1985 when the 'Cats upended the Tigers, 69-54.

Point Production...
After going scoreless in the opening half of the Baylor game (Jan. 16), Larry Reid has come on to score 45 points over the last five halves of play. Reid posted 14 in the second half vs. the Bears and a game-high 18 vs. Iowa State (Jan. 19). After a 13-point outing at Colorado Tuesday, the senior has accounted for 26.0 percent of the Wildcats scoring load and connected on 44.4 percent (17 of 43 FGs) of his shots over the last 100 minutes of action. In addition, during that 100 minutes of play, Reid has only been off the floor for six minutes.
Da barrosa Shines...
Freshman forward Marcelo Da Barrosa has had an opportunity to see significant minutes over the last couple weeks. Da Barrosa, who enrolled at K-State late last spring, but did not see game action, has played in five of the last six games, including the last four contests. In eight minutes of action vs. Missouri (Jan. 12), Da Barrosa tallied four points (2 of 3 FGs) on a pair of mid-range jumpers and one rebound. He followed that up with a career-high 20 minutes at Baylor (Jan. 16) where he matched his career-high with 10 points. The 6-foot-7 forward, who scored five points (2 of 4 FGs) at Colorado, has continued to be deadly from the outside. Over his last five games, Da Barrosa has averaged 7.2 points and 2.4 rebounds, and connected on 16 of his 21 field-goal attempts (76.2 percent).
Hot from Behind the Arc...
Senior Larry Reid has been heating up from behind the three-point line. Reid hit all three of his attempts vs. Iowa State (Jan. 19) and had been good on five straight from behind the arc until going 1-for-5 at Colorado Tuesday. Over the last three games, the 6-foot point guard is 8-for-15 (58.4 percent) in three-point shooting.
Forcing the Action...
The Wildcats forced a season-high tying 19 turnovers in their win over Iowa State (Jan. 19) and won the turnover battle vs. Colorado (11-9). In the past two games, the opposition has turned the ball over a total of 30 times, while the 'Cats have committed just 21 TO's. On the season, K-State is forcing 14.0 turnovers per game and ranks 10th in the Big 12 in turnover margin (-0.94 pg).
Role Adjustment...
After starting eight of the first 10 games, Gilson DeJesus has come off the bench in the last six contests. The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native had one of his strongest games this season in a 23-minute stint vs. Iowa State (Jan. 19), his longest outing since playing a season-best 29 minutes vs. Western Carolina (Dec. 19). DeJesus scored five points on two of five field-goal attempts and collected a career-high eight rebounds vs. the Cyclones. The 6-foot-5 junior, who is seeing action at off-guard and small forward, hit double figures for the first time since scoring 18 points vs. WCU with a 10-point effort (4 of 6 FGs) at Colorado. Over the last two games, DeJesus is averaging 7.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in 22.5 minutes of action. In addition, over the last five games he has gone 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) from the floor.
Controlling the Paint...
A key to the seven Wildcat victories this season has been their scoring dominance inside. On the season, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 498 to 394 in the paint. The disparity in interior scoring is especially evident in the seven K-State wins. In their victories, the Wildcats held a 110-point advantage in the paint, but were edged by a total of six points in their nine losses. Overall, the Wildcats have held a low-post scoring edge in 11 of their 16 games this season.
Here's a look at what the Wildcats have done in the paint vs. each opponent this season...

Road Trip...
The Wildcats opened a two-game conference road swing in Colorado Tuesday. After playing at Missouri this Saturday, the 'Cats open a three-game homestand. So far this season, KSU is 0-5 away from home.
Atchison Gets Increased Time...
After coming off the bench in the Wildcats' first 11 games, Phineas Atchison earned his first starting assignment of the season at Texas Tech (Jan. 6). The 6-foot-1 guard, who was the Wildcats' leading scorer last season, took Larry Reid's spot in the opening lineup after Reid suffered a strained right quadriceps in the Fairleigh Dickinson game. Atchison responded with a team-high 12 points and a career-high four assists in 39 minutes of action. The senior went to post a season-high 16 points at Baylor (Jan. 16) and tallied 11 points at Colorado Tuesday. Over the last six games, Atchison has scored in double figures four times and is averaging 9.8 points per game, up from his season average of 5.9 ppg.
Protecting the Arc...
The Wildcats have been solid defensively throughout the season. Not only do the 'Cats rank first in the Big 12 in defensive field goal percentage (39.0), but they also are third in the league in three-point field goal percentage defense (31.4). In fact, the Wildcats have held eight of their 16 opponents under 33.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc and held two of the top three-point shooting teams in the Big 12 in check over the past 10 days. Baylor, which came into last week's game ranked second in the league in three-point shooting (39.6 percent), was held to just 25.0 percent (6 of 24 FGs) from beyond the arc. It was the Bears second worst outing from behind the three-point line this season (23.8 vs. Oklahoma State). The 'Cats also held Iowa State, the top three-point shooting team (39.5 percent) in the league entering the game, to 16.7 percent (2 of 12 FGs). CU, however, broke that string by going 10-for-24 (41.7 percent) from three-point land, including an impressive 7 of 11 effort by Blair Wilson.
Distributing the Ball...
A key to the Wildcats' offense is Larry Reid and his ability to direct the attack. Reid, who posted 109 assists last season (t-14th on the Wildcat single-season list), has been getting his teammates more involved. The senior point guard dished out a career-high 11 assists vs. Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 29) and had a pair of 8-assist efforts (vs. Wichita State/vs. North Texas) this year. On the season, Reid ranks third in the Big 12 in assists per game (5.7) and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.7-to-1. It's early, but he is currently also on pace to set a new K-State single-season record for assists per game (see chart below).

Smooth Operator...
Freshman Nick Williams, who has started 13 of the past 14 games and played 30 or minutes in six of the last nine contests, started his first game at point guard at Texas Tech (Jan. 6). Williams, subbing for an injured Larry Reid, responded with nine points, four assists and three rebounds vs. the Red Raiders. The 6-foot-4 native of Arlington, Texas, seemed to make a smooth transition from his normal off-guard position as he did not turn the ball over in 31 minutes of action. He has been solid with the ball since, tallying 16 assists and just eight turnovers in his last five games.
Jim Wooldridge at-A-Glance...
*Jim Wooldridge is in his 15th season as a collegiate head coach with an overall record of 247-174 (.587) and 18-28 (.391) at K-State.
*This is his second season as the Wildcat head coach and his fourth career head coaching position (Central Missouri, 1985-91, Southwest Texas 1991-94, Louisiana Tech, 1994-98). Wooldridge is the 20th head coach in the history of the K-State program.
*Before coming to Manhattan last season, Wooldridge served two seasons (1998-99, 1999-2000) as an assistant coach under Tim Floyd with the Chicago Bulls.
*Wooldridge turned around two struggling programs - Southwest Texas and Louisiana Tech - in his career. Wooldridge took over a SWT program in 1991-92 that had posted seven-straight losing seasons. He had them above .500 in year two and in the NCAA Tournament by year three (1993-94). Wooldridge went on to his alma mater, La. Tech, where he took an NCAA probation ridden 2-25 team to 14-13 in his first season on the job (1994-95).
* All three of his assistant coaches (Mike Miller, Robbie Laing, Charles Baker) have served as a head coach at least once during their careers.
Back on Track...
One of the 'Cats main inside scoring threats, forward Matt Siebrandt has put together his best scoring efforts of the season over the last three weeks. After scoring 10 points in the Wildcats' loss at Iowa (Dec. 22), Siebrandt, who scored in double figures 16 times last season, followed that performance up with a season-high 14 points, including 12 in the first half, in the victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. In fact he has scored in double figures in four of the last seven games. In those seven contests, Siebrandt has averaged 9.0 points and connected on 54.3 percent (25 of 46 FGs) from the floor.
LIneup Changes...
The Wildcats used their ninth different starting lineup of the season vs. Missouri (Jan. 12) as Larry Reid, Nick Williams, Quentin Buchanan, Matt Siebrandt and Pervis Pasco opened the contest, and that lineup has remained intact the last three games. With the injury to Larry Reid, the Wildcats used their eighth different starting lineup of the season at Texas Tech (Jan. 6) as Buchanan, Siebrandt, Pasco, Williams and Phineas Atchison opened that game. The two constants this season have been Pasco and Reid. Pasco has started all 16 games, while Reid has been in the opening lineup 15 times. Following closely behind is Williams who has started 13 of the last 14 games. Meanwhile, Gilson DeJesus started eight games earlier this season, while Siebrandt and Buchanan have also been in the opening lineup eight times.
On the Rise...
A pair of Wildcats, Nick Williams and Pervis Pasco, have seen their scoring averages rise steadily over the last month. Over the course of the last 12 games, Williams' average has jumped from 3.8 points per game to 8.1 points a contest, while Pasco's has risen from 6.8 to 11.6. Pasco has scored in double figures in eight of the past 10 games, while Williams has scored 10 or more in five of the last 10 contests.
Three's Company...
The Wildcat trio of Pervis Pasco, Larry Reid and Nick Williams has been carrying the bulk of the scoring load for the Wildcats this season. On the season, the threesome has accounted for 47.9 percent (522 of 1,088) of the point production. In fact, Pasco, Reid and Williams went through a two-game stretch where they accounted for 84.3 percent of the scoring. After posting 50 of the Wildcats' 56 points at Northwestern (Dec. 8), Pasco (30), Reid (13) and Williams (19) followed that up by scoring 62 of the 'Cats 84 points vs. North Texas (Dec. 15). The Wildcats have distributed the scoring a little more evenly recently as at least four 'Cats have scored in double figures in five of the last seven games.
ON the League Charts...
Pervis Pasco's success has vaulted him among the Big 12's elite in a number of offensive and defensive categories. Pasco ranks sixth in field goal percentage (53.7), third in rebounding (8.8 pg) and third in blocked shots (1.7 pg). In fact, the junior forward is one of four players in the league to rank among the top 10 in field goal percentage, rebounding and blocked shots. Arthur Johnson of Missouri is fourth in field goal percentage (56.5), fourth in rebounding (8.5 pg) and first in blocked shots (2.0 pg). Nick Collison of Kansas is second in field goal percentage (61.1), sixth in rebounding (8.2 pg) and second in blocked shots (1.9 pg). Tyray Pearson of Iowa State is seventh in field goal percentage (52.4), fifth in rebounding (8.4 pg) and eighth in blocked shots (1.3 pg).
Double Time...
Pervis Pasco is among the league leaders in double-doubles. Pasco notched his sixth double-double of the season vs. Colorado with 11 points and 11 rebounds and is tied for third in the Big 12 in that category with Nick Collison of Kansas and Stephane Pelle of Colorado. Drew Gooden of Kansas leads the league with 14, while Arthur Johnson of Missouri has seven.
Picking up Where he Left off...
Senior Larry Reid continues to be the Wildcats' go-to player. Reid, an honorable mention All-Big 12 performer last season, leads the team in most offensive categories - points (13.7 pg), assists (5.7 pg), steals (1.7 pg) and free-throw percentage (84.7/50 of 59). The 6-foot point guard started off the season by scoring 15 points and collecting eight rebounds and seven assists in the 'Cats 64-60 win over Troy State and has since continued to spark K-State. Even when he has not shot the ball well, he has continued to be an integral part of the offense. Despite a 1-for-9 shooting performance in the win over Wisconsin-Green Bay (11/20), Reid made major contributions in his 37 minutes on the floor. He was 7 of 8 from the free throw line, dished out four assists and scored all of his nine points in the decisive second half in which the Wildcats rallied from a nine-point deficit at the break. Reid has also posted two of the top four scoring outputs for the Wildcats this season. He scored 22 points vs. Ole Miss (Nov. 24) and tallied 20 at Northwestern (Dec. 8). Reid even closed in on a triple-double vs. North Texas (Dec. 15) with 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. In the Missouri game (Jan. 12), Reid scored a team-high 17 points and distributed six assists. He followed that up with a 14-point outing at Baylor (Jan. 16) and a game-high 18 points vs. Iowa State (Jan. 19). The Midwest City, Okla., native once again led the 'Cats in scoring at CU with 13 points.
Streaks...
*Phineas Atchison has connected on 14 straight free throws, dating back to the Texas Tech game (Jan. 6).
*Larry Reid had led the Wildcats in assists in every game in which he played until the Colorado game. Nick Williams posted a team-high four assists vs. the Buffaloes, while Reid dished out two.
*Pervis Pasco has started a team-best 16 straight games. Reid had his string of 40-consecutive starts broken vs. Texas Tech.
*Pasco has led the Wildcats in rebounding in seven straight games.
Quick Turnaround...
The Wildcats and Tigers are facing each other for the second time in two weeks. It marks the shortest time between games in the season series since 1968-69 when both teams faced each other one week apart (Feb. 24 in Columbia, March 3 in Manhattan).
Scoring Distribution...
The Wildcats placed five players in double figures for the third time this season in their win over Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 29). In that contest, Pervis Pasco (19), Matt Siebrandt (14), Phineas Atchison (13), Nick Williams (13) and Marcelo Da Barrosa (10) all hit double digits in scoring. It marked the second consecutive game in which the 'Cats placed five players in double figures. Pasco (16), Larry Reid (12), Siebrandt (10), Williams (10) and Travis Reynolds (10) all scored 10 or more at Iowa (Dec. 22). The 'Cats had five players (Pasco, 16, Janerio Spurlock, 12, Reid, 11, Williams, 11, Siebrandt, 10) in double figures vs. Gardner-Webb (Dec. 1). Last season, five Wildcats scored in double figures on two occasions (vs. Texas-San Antonio, Nov. 18, 2000, vs. Tennessee State, Nov. 28, 2000).
Instant Offense...
The Wildcats' leading scorer from a season ago, Phineas Atchison has seen his role adjust this season. Atchison is averaging 5.9 points per game in 14.5 minutes of action, but has come up big in three of the Wildcats' wins. The 6-foot-1 senior, who connected on 40.7 percent of his three-point attempts last season (No. 9 in the Big 12), has provided some instant offense in victories over Wisconsin-Green Bay, North Texas and Fairleigh Dickinson. Atchison scored a then season-high 14 points (6 of 9 FGs) in 16 minutes vs. the Phoenix (Nov. 20) and went on to score seven points in nine minutes vs. the Mean Green (Dec. 15). Atchison saw 18 minutes of action vs. Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 29) and made that time on the floor count. He scored 13 points and went 4-for-8 from the floor. Atchison got his first start of the season at Texas Tech and scored 12 points in 39 minutes on the floor. He posted a season-high 16 points at Baylor. After a two-point outing vs. Iowa State, he scored 11 points in 17 minutes at Colorado.
Block party...
It's only a little over halfway through the season, but Pervis Pasco is on pace to crack the K-State single-season lists for blocked shots. Pasco is averaging 1.69 blocks per game and has rejected 27 shots on the season. The single-season top 10 for blocked shots and blocks per game are listed below...
