MANHATTAN, Kan. - Senior Terence Newman of Kansas State has been named one of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, with the winner being announced on Dec. 12 as part of ESPN's College Football Awards show live from Orlando, Fla.
Newman, a senior from Salina, Kan., joined Troy Polamalu of USC and Mike Doss of Ohio State as finalists for the Thorpe Award, given annually to the top college defensive back in the nation. The field of three was selected from a group of 14 semifinalists that were announced in late November.
Chris Canty was the last Wildcat to be named a finalist for the Thorpe Award, being one of the final three in both 1995 and 1996. K-State has had players among semifinalists for the Thorpe Award four times since 1993 (Jaime Mendez, 1993; Canty, 1995 and 1996; Newman, 2001).
Also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award, Newman will be honored as part of an awards dinner in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday, Dec. 9. The Nagurski Trophy is given by the Charlotte Touchdown Club to the defensive player of the year in college football, regardless of position. Newman is one of five finalists for the Nagurski Trophy.
Newman was also named Tuesday as The Dallas Morning News' Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. He has already earned the honor in voting by the league's coaches and from the Kansas City Star. Newman was joined on the Dallas Morning News' first-team All-Big 12 squad by teammates Nick Leckey, Tank Reese and Josh Buhl.
