MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State has accepted an invitation to play Arizona State in the 2002 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27, Wildcat athletics director Tim Weiser announced Sunday.
The Wildcats, 10-2 overall and ranked sixth in both national polls, will face the Sun Devils, 8-5, in the game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN at 7 p.m. Central Time (5 p.m. Pacific).
It will be Kansas State's third appearance in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. The Wildcats beat Colorado State, 54-21, in the 1995 game, and beat Washington, 24-20, in 1999.
The Wildcats are 0-5 all-time against Arizona State, with the most recent meeting being the first game in Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder's tenure at the school. The Sun Devils beat K-State, 31-0, on Sept. 9, 1989, in that contest.
Arizona State finished third in the Pacific-10 Conference with a 5-3 league record. The Sun Devils won three straight games in the middle of the season over Oregon State, Oregon and Washington to reach the 7-2 mark. A three-game losing streak that followed was snapped in Arizona State's 34-20 win over rival Arizona.
?We are very pleased to accept this invitation on behalf of our football team and our fans,? said Weiser. ?Kansas State has always had a good relationship with the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl and they have worked very hard to provide our teams and fans an exciting experience that will provide a very fitting end to a great Wildcat season.?
