Manhattan, Kan. - Kansas State University announced Thursday that the option to relocate the Sept. 21 football game with Southern California to Arrowhead Stadium is no longer being considered.
There had been some speculation that the game with the Trojans could have been moved to Kansas City. The 2002 season will be the first in school history in which Kansas State will play eight home games.
"After weighing the pros and cons of moving the game, it was our decision to keep the contest in Manhattan," said director of athletics Tim Weiser. "While we appreciated the opportunity presented to us by the Chiefs organization and Dorna Sports Promotions, we decided in fairness to our fans and our football program, it was preferable to play the game at KSU Stadium."
"It was important to me to take into consideration the vast majority of our fans as well as the business community of Manhattan when making the decision not to play the USC game at Arrowhead, even though our relationship with the Chiefs organization has been extremely close," said head football coach Bill Snyder.
"The people of Kansas City and the Kansas City Chiefs organization have been tremendous partners in football for Kansas State University," Snyder said. "Our two games at Arrowhead in 2000 were met with great approval by both entities. We greatly appreciate that."
The Wildcats opened the 2000 season at Arrowhead against Iowa in the Eddie Robinson Classic and played Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game later that year.
K-State will also have an open date before beginning its Big 12 Conference schedule for the first time since 1998.
Details regarding game times and promotional dates will be announced at a later time.
