All-Around Game...
Larry Reid has proven to be one of the most indispensible players in the Big 12 Conference. Reid's numbers bear this out. The senior from Midwest City, Okla., is one of only two players in the league to post at least 300 points, 125 assists and 30 steals. Joining Reid on this list is Kirk Hinrich of Kansas. Reid has scored 353 points, dished out a career-high 132 assists and posted 37 steals. Hinrich, meanwhile, has scored 406 points, posted 148 assists and recorded 43 steals.
On the Mark...
Over the last eight games, Kansas State has connected on 47.8 percent (210 of 439) of its field-goal attempts, including four 50-percent outings (50.0 vs. Texas, 54.5 vs. OSU, 50.9 vs. Texas A&M, 51.9 at Iowa State). The 'Cats have increased their shooting percentage from 42.6 to 44.3 (ninth in the Big 12). On the season, KSU has shot 50.0 percent or greater from the field seven times. Last year, the 'Cats connected on at least half their shots in just three games. In addition, K-State has been better from behind the three-point line. K-State has jumped to third in the Big 12 (league games only) in field goal percentage (45.6) and fifth in three-point field-goal percentage (38.7).
Triple Threat...
The Wildcats have been strong defending the three-point shot all season, but have also improved their shooting from beyond the arc in recent weeks. K-State ranks third overall in the Big 12 in three point field-goal percentage defense (32.2 percent) and second (33.2) during league games. With a 44.6 percent shooting effort beyond the arc over the last five games, the 'Cats have jumped to fifth in three point field-goal percentage (38.9 percent) in conference games.
Accountability...
Larry Reid, the Wildcats' top scorer throughout the season, has shouldered more of the scoring load since Big 12 play opened. Reid, who has scored in double figures in 11 of 13 conference games, is averaging 16.1 points per game in league play, which ranks 12th in the Big 12. The senior has consistently been the 'Cats go-to player. On the season, Reid has been directly responsible for 36.6 percent (353 points + 132 assists) of the K-State offense (1675 points). He ranks second in the Big 12 in points responsible for (points scored + points assisted on/team points), trailing only Bernard King of Texas A&M who has accounted for 39.9 percent of the Aggie offense (see chart below)
Hot from Behind the arc...
Senior Larry Reid has been heating up from behind the three-point line. Reid has hit two or more three-pointers in eight of his 13 conference games, including a season-high tying 4-for-6 effort at Nebraska (Feb. 9), and has connected on 46.7 percent (28 of 60) of his trifectas in Big 12 action. He also has a string of 13 straight games with at least one three-point field goal.
Close Shaves...
The Wildcats have been involved in quite a few close games this season, including the last two games. On the season, the 'Cats are 4-4 in games decided by six points or less. Through 25 games last year, KSU was 2-5 in games decided by six or fewer points.
Kansas At-A-Glance...
*The Jayhawks lead the Big 12 in scoring (92.6 points), scoring margin (16.9), field-goal percentage (51.9) and three-point shooting (42.1 percent).
*The Jayhawks, who have won 12 straight games, are looking to become the first Big 12 team to go undefeated in league play since the inception of the conference.
*Drew Gooden, who is averaging 20.9 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, leads the Big 12 in both categories. Gooden has also collected a league-high 20 double-doubles.
*Drew Gooden, Nick Collison, Kirk Hinrich, Jeff Boschee and Aaron Miles have started all 27 games for Kansas this season.
*Head coach Roy Williams is in his 14th season guiding the Jayhawks, and he sports a record of 378-91 (.806) in his tenure. On Feb. 21, 2001, Williams collected career win No. 349, giving him second place on the Jayhawks' all-time coaching wins list. He now trails only legendary former Kansas coach Phog Allen for first place on that ledger.
Kansas State-Kansas Series (KU Leads 162-88)...
*Kansas has won 23 straight in a series that dates back to 1907. K-State's last win in the series came on Jan. 17, 1994 when the 'Cats upset the No. 1-ranked Jayhawks, 68-64, in Allen Fieldhouse.

Ball Distribution...
In nine of the last 13 games, K-State's assist total has equaled or exceeded its turnovers. The Wildcats posted their second-highest assist total of the season - 20 - along with just 11 turnovers vs. Texas A&M (Feb. 12) and tallied 11 assists and only nine turnovers at Iowa State Saturday. The 'Cats also posted 16 assists, compared with only seven turnovers vs. Colorado (Feb. 20). Over the last 13 games, the Wildcats have totaled 184 assists and 158 turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.16-to-1. That mark is an improvement over the 'Cats 0.91-to-1 ratio in their first 12 games of the year. K-State ranks ninth in the Big 12 with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.02-to-1.0.
Atchison Heats Up...
A starter in only six games last season, Phineas Atchison, who scored the game-winning three-point play vs. Texas (Jan. 30) and posted a season-high 21 points at Nebraska (Feb. 9), has continued to come off the bench this season. Atchison did earn a starting assignment at Texas Tech (Jan. 6) and has become more of a scoring threat over the last 13 contests. The 6-foot-1 guard, who was the Wildcats' leading scorer last season (11.9 ppg), took Larry Reid's spot in the opening lineup vs. the Red Raiders after Reid suffered a strained right quadriceps in the Fairleigh Dickinson game. Atchison responded with a team-high 12 points and a career-high four assists in 39 minutes of action. Since then the senior has gone on post double figures in 10 of the last 15 games. Over that span, he is averaging 10.9 points per game, up from his average of 3.5 ppg over the first 10 contests of the season.
Better vs. the Best...
Larry Reid, who scored a season-high 27 points vs. No. 2 Kansas (Feb. 4), has played some of his best basketball this season against the top competition. Reid has averaged 16.3 points over the last nine games, with four of those matchups coming vs. either a ranked foe (No. 18 Missouri, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Kansas) or a team which was ranked in the week prior to their meeting (Texas was No. 24 before falling out). This tendency has been consistent throughout the season as Reid play increases with the competition. In seven games this season vs. teams currently ranked in the Top 75 of the RPI, he has averaged 19.1 points and shot 47.5 percent from the field.
Back on Track...
One of the 'Cats main inside scoring threats, forward Matt Siebrandt has put together a string of double-digit scoring efforts. Siebrandt has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 16 games, after producing one double-digit effort in the season's first nine contests. Over the last 16 games, Siebrandt is averaging 9.4 points and has connected on 52.6 percent (61 of 116 FGs) from the floor.
Getting their Best Shot...
K-State's Big 12 opponents this season have a record of 4-11 in games preceding their meeting with the Wildcats. The only teams to claim a victory in their game prior to the matchup with the 'Cats were Texas Tech, Texas and Kansas (twice).
Scoring by the Minute...
Phineas Atchison, who posted a season-high 21 points at Nebraska (Feb. 9), has been a productive scorer during his time on the court lately. In fact, over the last six games, Atchison has been on the floor for 109 minutes and posted 72 points on 26 of 52 shooting (50.0 percent). That translates into a 26.4-point average per 40 minutes over that span.
Road Work...
The Wildcats are looking for their first road win of the season in Lawrence. K-State is 0-9 this season, including an 0-7 mark in Big 12 Conference play, away from Bramlage. Larry Reid has led the 'Cats in scoring on the road, posting a 16.0 point-per-game average, which is actually higher than his home mark of 14.1 ppg. Phineas Atchison has been one of the 'Cats best scoring threats on the road. On the season, Atchison is averaging 10.8 ppg on the road and 6.4 at home. Atchison posted a career-high 28 points last season at Kansas.
Jim Wooldridge at-A-Glance...
*Jim Wooldridge is in his 15th season as a collegiate head coach with an overall record of 251-179 (.584) and 22-32 (.407) at K-State.
*This is his second season as the Wildcat head coach and his fourth career head coaching position (Central Missouri, 1985-91, Southwest Texas 1991-94, Louisiana Tech, 1994-98). Wooldridge is the 20th head coach in the history of the K-State program.
*Wooldridge has led the Wildcats to three wins over ranked opponents in his tenure, including a 70-61 victory over No. 9 Oklahoma State this season.
*Before coming to Manhattan last season, Wooldridge served two seasons (1998-99, 1999-2000) as an assistant coach under Tim Floyd with the Chicago Bulls.
*Wooldridge turned around two struggling programs - Southwest Texas and Louisiana Tech - in his career. Wooldridge took over a SWT program in 1991-92 that had posted seven-straight losing seasons. He had them above .500 in year two and in the NCAA Tournament by year three (1993-94). Wooldridge went on to his alma mater, La. Tech, where he took an NCAA probation ridden 2-25 team to 14-13 in his first season on the job (1994-95).
* All three of his assistant coaches (Mike Miller, Robbie Laing, Charles Baker) have served as a head coach at least once during their careers.
Role Adjustment...
After starting eight of the first 10 games, Gilson DeJesus came off the bench for 11 games before starting the last four contests. The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native had one of his strongest outings of the season in a 27-minute stint vs. Texas A&M (Feb. 12). He scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and posted a career-high three steals. It was his fifth double-digit outing of the season and sixth time in the last 10 games he has scored eight or more points. The 6-foot-5 junior, who is seeing most of his action at small forward, also hit double figures in conference play at Colorado (10) on Jan. 22 and at Missouri (10) on Jan. 26, . Over the last 10 games, DeJesus is averaging 7.2 points and has hit 25 of his 50 field-goal attempts (50.0 percent) in 21.8 minutes of action.
Target practice...
Among the Big 12 leaders in field-goal percentage throughout the season, Pervis Pasco has been even more effective of late. The athletic 6-foot-9 Pasco, who is fourth in the Big 12 in field goal percentage (56.4), has shot 64.0 percent (32 of 50 FGs) from the floor over the last seven games. In fact, he is among a select group on the league charts. Pasco is the only player in the Big 12 to rank among the top five in field goal percentage, rebounding (fifth/8.2 pg) and blocked shots (third/1.52 pg).
Da Barrosa Continues to Contribute...
Freshman forward Marcelo Da Barrosa has had an opportunity to see significant minutes in Big 12 action. Da Barrosa, who enrolled at K-State late last spring, but did not see game action, has played in 13 of the last 14 games, including the last 12 contests. The 6-foot-7 forward, who has shown the ability to be a consistent outside threat, scored in double figures for the third time this season vs. Texas A&M (Feb. 16) when he posted a career-high tying 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor. He also added a career-high six rebounds in that game. Over his last 14 games, Da Barrosa has averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds, and connected on 28 of his 51 field-goal attempts (54.9 percent).
Smooth Operator...
Nick Williams, who has started 20 games this season, has played 30 or minutes in 10 of the last 18 contests, including a career-high 34 minutes at Nebraska (Feb. 9) and 33 minutes vs. Colorado (Feb. 20). The 6-foot-4 guard started his first game at point guard in the conference opener at Texas Tech (Jan. 6). Williams, subbing for an injured Larry Reid, responded with nine points, four assists and three rebounds vs. the Red Raiders. The Arlington, Texas, native seemed to make a smooth transition from his normal off-guard position as he did not turn the ball over in 31 minutes of action. Williams, who plays the point when Reid is out of the game, has shot the ball better of late. He has connected on 30 of his 58 field goal attempts (51.7 percent) and seven of his 19 threes (36.8 percent) over the last nine games. Williams has scored the ball better as well. Over the last five games, he has scored in double figures four times and averaged 11.4 ppg.
Back-to-Back 100-Assist Seasons...
Larry Reid became the fourth Wildcat in school history to post back-to-back 100 assist seasons when he dished out seven assists vs. Oklahoma State (Feb. 2). Anthony Beane was the last 'Cat to perform the feat (153 in 1993-94, 137 in 1992-93). Steve Henson, K-State's all-time career assist leader, had four-straight 100-assist seasons (141 in 1989-90, 141 in 1988-89, 186 in 1987-88, 114 in 1986-87), while Tim Jankovich (123 in 1982-82, 119 in 1980-81) was the first player on K-State record to eclipse the 100-assist mark in consecutive seasons.
Streaks...
*Larry Reid has led the Wildcats in assists in nine straight games and all but one outing this season. Nick Williams posted a team-high four assists vs Colorado (Jan. 22), while Reid dished out two in that game.
*Reid had his string of nine straight double-digit scoring outings snapped at nine after posting nine points vs. Texas A&M (Feb. 12). He went to post 14 points at OU (Feb. 16) before scoring seven vs. Colorado (Feb. 20) and following that up with 21 points at Iowa State (feb. 23).
*Reid has hit at least one three-pointer in 13 straight games.
*Pervis Pasco has started a team-best 25 straight games.
*Pasco has led the 'Cats in rebounding in 19 games this season.
Double Time...
Pervis Pasco is among the league leaders in double-doubles. Pasco notched his seventh double-double of the season at Missouri (Jan. 26) with 11 points and 11 rebounds and is tied for seventh in the Big 12 in that category with T.J. Ford of Texas and Tyray Pearson of Iowa State. Drew Gooden of Kansas leads the league with 20, while Stephane Pelle of Colorado and Aaron McGhee of Oklahoma each have 10. Arthur Johnson of Missouri (9), Nick Collison of Kansas (8) and James Thomas of Texas (8) follow them.
Forcing the Action...
The Wildcats forced a season-high tying 19 turnovers in their win over Iowa State (Jan. 19) and nearly matched that total as Texas A&M (Feb. 12) surrendered the ball 18 times. KSU won the turnover battle vs. Colorado (11-9) on Jan. 22, before Missouri (Jan. 26) turned it over just six times compared to eight for K-State. K-State went on to commit only 11 turnovers vs. Texas (Jan. 30) compared with 13 for the Longhorns. K-State turned it over 17 times vs. Oklahoma State (Feb. 2), but seven of those occurred in the last four minutes with the game already decided. In the past 11 games, the opposition has turned the ball over a total of 145 times, while the 'Cats have committed just 128 TO's (turnover margin = +1.55). On the season, K-State is forcing 13.6 turnovers per game and ranks ninth in the Big 12 in turnover margin (-0.28 pg).
Turning It Around...
K-State has done a better job of holding onto the ball lately. Over the last 10 games, the Wildcats have averaged 11.6 turnovers. In contrast, K-State surrendered the ball 15.3 times a contest through its first 15 games. In addition, K-State has posted 12 or fewer turnovers in 10 games this season, including a season-best seven-TO effort vs. Colorado (Feb. 20). Last year, the 'Cats surrendered the ball 12 times or less in seven contests.
Focal POint...
Senior Larry Reid continues to be the Wildcats' go-to player. Reid, an honorable mention All-Big 12 performer last season, leads the team in most offensive categories - points (14.47pg), assists (5.5 pg), steals (1.5 pg) and free-throw percentage (82.6/71 of 86). The 6-foot point guard has been even more effective since the conference season opened, having posted 16.1 points per game and connecting on 41.4 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from three-point land. Even when he has not shot the ball well, he has continued to be an integral part of the offense. Despite a 1-for-9 shooting performance in the win over Wisconsin-Green Bay (Nov. 20), Reid made major contributions in his 37 minutes on the floor. He was 7 of 8 from the free throw line, dished out four assists and scored all of his nine points in the decisive second half in which the Wildcats rallied from a nine-point deficit at the break. Reid has also posted two of the top three scoring outputs for the Wildcats this season. He scored 22 points vs. Ole Miss (Nov. 24) and an individual season-high 27 vs. Kansas (Feb. 4). Reid even closed in on a triple-double vs. North Texas (Dec. 15) with 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. In the first Missouri game (Jan. 12), Reid scored a team-high 17 points and distributed six assists. He followed that up with a 14-point outing at Baylor (Jan. 16) and a game-high 18 points vs. Iowa State (Jan. 19). The Midwest City, Okla., native once again led the 'Cats in scoring at CU with 13 points and at MU with 19. He led KSU in scoring for the sixth straight game with his game-high 27-point outing vs. KU (Feb. 4), but had that string broken at Nebraska (Feb. 9) when he posted 15 points, six off Phineas Atchison's team-high 21. Reid posted only his fifth non double-digit outing of the season with seven points vs. Colorado (Feb. 20), but followed that up with 21 at Iowa State Saturday.
Scoring Distribution...
The Wildcats placed five players in double figures for the fifth time this season in their loss at Nebraska (Feb. 9). In that game, Phineas Atchison (21), Larry Reid (15), Nick Williams (11), Matt Siebrandt and Pervis Pasco (10) all scored in double figures. In KSU's game at Missouri (Jan. 26), Reid (19), Atchison (17), Siebrandt (11), Pasco (11) and Gilson DeJesus (10) all hit double figures. In K-State's win over Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 29), Pasco (19), Siebrandt (14), Atchison (13), Williams (13) and Marcelo Da Barrosa (10) all hit double digits in scoring. It marked the second consecutive game in which the 'Cats placed five players in double figures. Pasco (16), Reid (12), Siebrandt (10), Williams (10) and Travis Reynolds (10) scored 10 or more at Iowa (Dec. 22). The 'Cats had five players (Pasco, 16, Janerio Spurlock, 12, Reid, 11, Williams, 11, Siebrandt, 10) in double figures vs. Gardner-Webb (Dec. 1). Last season, five Wildcats scored in double figures on just two occasions (vs. Texas-San Antonio, Nov. 18, 2000, vs. Tennessee State, Nov. 28, 2000).
