Luttrell Named New England League Player of the Week

Warwick, R.I. - Kansas State rising senior outfielder Gabe Luttrell was named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Offensive Player of Week on Monday after posting a .409 average eight RBIs and four runs scored for the Newport (R.I.) Gulls last week.
Luttrell went 9-for-22 (.409) during the week with a league-high eight RBIs, four runs scored and three doubles. He posted a .500 slugging percentage in six games with a .458 on-base percentage. During the week, the Newport Gulls sported a 3-3 record and are currently in first place in the NECBL's Southern Division with an 8-6 record.
Luttrell is currently hitting .300 through 14 games this season with 12 RBIs, 12 runs scored and two home runs. Both his 12 RBIs and 12 runs scored rank second among individuals in the league. He is also 6-for-7 in stolen base attempts. He is playing along side Wildcat teammate Mitch Walter, who has allowed just one run on four hits in five innings of work with six strikeouts and no walks.
A native of Midwest City, Okla., Luttrell posted a .289 batting average for the Wildcats last season with 46 runs scored, 33 RBIs and five home runs in 54 starts. He ranked second on the teamwith 13 stolen bases and third with 22 multiple-hit games.
Luttrell helped Kansas State turn in one of its finest seasons in 2002, as the Wildcats managed 30 wins for the first time since 1997 and for just the eighth time in school history. K-State finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the rugged Big 12 Conference with nationally-ranked Baylor and Oklahoma State with identical 13-13 league marks and advanced to the Big 12 Tournament for the first time in the program's history. The Wildcats advanced all the way to the tournament semifinals with elimination wins over NCAA Regional participants Baylor and Texas Tech before falling to eventual College World Series participant Nebraska.
