Seven Wildcats Named to Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team

Dallas, Texas - Seven Kansas State volleyball players were named to the 2003 Academic All-Big 12 team, the league office announced Tuesday. The Wildcats’ seven selections on the first and second teams tied with Texas Tech for the most of any school in the conference. The seven selections also tied a record-high for K-State volleyball as the Wildcats have placed seven athletes on the list for the previous two seasons.
K-State seniors Laura Downey-Wallace, Lauren Goehring, Cari Jensen and Kris Jensen, junior Gabby Guerre and sophomore Katie Stanzel were all named to the first team while sophomore Michaela Franklin was named to the second team.
Downey-Wallace, the current Big 12 leader in digs, currently has a 3.72 grade point average in life sciences/pre-health, Goehring, the Big 12 leader in hitting percentage, has a 3.62 in management/operations management, Cari Jensen a 3.94 in kinesiology/pre-health and Kris Jensen a 3.95 in agribusiness. Junior Gabby Guerre, second in the Big 12 in assists, currently has a 3.51 in mechanical engineering while Katie Stanzel has a 3.34 in business administration. On the second team was Michaela Franklin, who currently has a 3.07 in family studies/human services.
Goehring and Cari and Kris Jensen have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 team three years in a row while Downey-Wallace earned her second career honor. Cari Jensen and Goehring were also recently named to the Academic All-District VII team with Jensen becoming eligible for her second all-America honor.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 42 first-team members combined with eight on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
The fifth-ranked Wildcats travel to Norman, Okla., Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match with Oklahoma.
