K-State Falls to EA Sports, 79-67, in First Exhibition

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Kansas State's second-half rally against EA Sports came up short as freshman Cartier Martin scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds in his first collegiate start Thursday night at Bramlage Coliseum. The Wildcats pulled together an 11-2 run to start the second half, but EA Sports capitalized on 20 K-State turnovers to win 79-67 in the Wildcats' first exhibition game of the season.
K-State's newcomers showed potential in the game as junior Jeremiah Massey grabbed 13 boards and scored eight points. Justin Williams scored 10 and pulled down eight rebounds, half on the offensive end, while Dez Willingham scored seven and dished out three assists. The five Wildcat newcomers combined for more than half of K-State's playing time Wednesday.
Free throws plagued the Wildcats as the team's 11-for-20 effort from the charity stripe made a difference in the game. The two teams shot nearly even field goal percentages (.306 for the Cats and .387 for EA Sports).
EA Sports outscored the Wildcats 40-28 in the first half. Though the Wildcats outrebounded the opponent 27-20, K-State shot only 33-percent (11-for-33) through the first 20 minutes. Sean Fountain's 12 first-half points and Robert O'Kelly's 13 helped EA head to the locker room with a 12-point lead. In the first half alone, EA Sports outscored K-State, 22-2, solely off turnovers.
K-State opened the second half with an 11-2 run to cut the halftime deficit to three at 42-39, but never got any closer than three for the remainder of the game. Down 69-60 with 3:28 left, Martin drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to six at 69-63, but EA Sports scored 10 of the final 14 points in the game to pull away, 79-67.
