Massey again leads, as K-State picks up 66-52 win over Bethune-Cookman

Dec 22, 2003 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Jeremiah Massey scored 17 points and Tim Ellis added 16, and Kansas State played its cleanest game ever in Bramlage Coliseum in beating winless Bethune-Cookman 66-52 on Monday night.

Kansas State committed only six personal fouls, one fewer than the previous record of seven set against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 1996. Bramlage opened in 1988.

The Wildcats (7-1) won their seventh straight at home, but winless Bethune-Cookman (0-6) still gave them plenty of trouble.

A full-court press by Bethune-Cookman -- also nicknamed the Wildcats -- had Kansas State frazzled in the first half, when Bethune-Cookman shot 50 percent and led by as many as five points.

But after Kendrick Frink hit three free throws to give Bethune-Cookman a 38-35 lead with 12:06 left in the game, Kansas State slowly started to take control.

Massey's one-handed jumper in the lane and Tim Ellis' 3-pointer gave Kansas State a 42-38 lead with just under 10 minutes left. Bethune-Cookman never got closer.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach with a 14-0 run that sealed Bethune-Cookman's fifth straight road loss.

Marques Hayden added 11 points and 12 rebounds for Kansas State, and Frank Richards scored 10 points.

Markey Picard, Anis Taylor and Diondre Larmond led Bethune-Cookman with nine each.

Kansas State quickly took a 12-4 lead early in the first half before going cold, shooting just 36 percent before the break.

A 9-0 run gave Bethune-Cookman its biggest lead of the game at 26-21 with 1:35 to go in the half. The game was tied at 26 at halftime.
