Karas Finishes Fourth at College Station Decathlon

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Kansas State senior Josef Karas finished fourth with a career-high 7,418 points Friday in the Gold Division decathlon at the College Station Multi-Event Festival hosted by Texas A&M.
Karas' total surpassed the 7,360 he had at this meet in 2002 and improved his decathlon mark, which was already fourth on Kansas State's all-time list.
The Wildcat senior scored 778 points in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.60 clocking, while his best finishes of the second day of competition were thirds in the discus (139-9) and pole vault (14-9). He was only 17 points behind second-place Paul Speer of Wichita State and 15 points behind Allen Bulick of Texas A&M. Stephen Harris scored 8,103 points to win the Gold decathlon by more than 600 points.
In the two divisions of the heptathlon being contested, Kansas State freshman Breanna Eveland finished her first collegiate heptathlon with 3,681 points, placing 17th in the Bronze Division competition. Eveland placed 10th in the javelin at 89-11 in her best placing of the day. Her best scoring event was the 800 meters, where her 2:40.52 earned 567 points.
In the Gold Division heptathlon, JaNelle Wright finished third in the long jump at 18-3.75 before scratching from the remainder of the day's events. Former Wildcat All-American Austra Skujyte won the heptathlon with 5,787 points, more than 400 points ahead of Amber Miller of Angelo State.
Kansas State's full team opens its outdoor season next Saturday, with athletes scheduled to compete at both the Arizona State Invitational and the Stanford Invitational.
