Mike Ahearn Scholarship Fund

Aug 01, 2003 | General

The Mike Ahearn Scholarship Fund was founded in 1964 with the primary objective of raising money from the private sector for athletic scholarships and capital improvements. With scholarship and operational costs rising each year, Kansas State Athletics is more dependent than ever on annual gift income to compete for championships.

Founded in 1863, Kansas State University is the oldest public institution of higher learning in Kansas. Wildcat Athletics have been part of the University tradition for over a century and K-State has enjoyed one of the most successful athletic histories in the country. Ahearn Fund members have played the key role for over 40 years providing scholarship support for the thousands of student-athletes who have proudly represented K-State.

Each year, through the support of Ahearn Scholarship Fund members, we are able to fully fund the NCAA maximum 220.8 scholarships. Between full and partial scholarships over 450 student-athletes receive financial aid to attend K-State each year. Many of these student-athletes would not attend K-State without this assistance.

As a member of the prestigious Big 12 Conference, K-State sponsors 16 NCAA Division I programs. The Big 12 is one of the top athletic conferences in the country and winning championships takes a full commitment from student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans. As a member of the Ahearn Scholarship Fund, you are helping finance scholarships, facilities, equipment, travel, recruiting and other operational expenses for K-State Athletics. Each of these areas is important to giving our student-athletes a championship level experience in the classroom and on the playing field.

As we continue toward our goal of consistently competing for championships, we are proud to announce the largest and most aggressive capital campaign in K-State Athletics history - the Wildcat Victory Campaign - a $70 million facilities initiative.  Of the $70 million goal, the K-State Athletics department is planning to bond up to $35 million to be paid through department revenues. We are asking that loyal K-State fans meet the department half way with contributions totaling $35 million. The improvements made to facilities will enhance the revenue generating ability and put the department in position to continue to compete for championships.

The Wildcat Victory Campaign will require all K-State fans to commit to a level of support that is higher than anything done before. The two-year campaign is asking K-Staters to support the Wildcat Victory Campaign above-and-beyond what they are doing in support of the Ahearn Scholarship Fund or the Barrett Endowment Society. It is vital that we continue to be able to pay for scholarships while enhancing our facilities.

K-State Athletics values each of the 7,790 members of the Ahearn Scholarship Fund because you are the key stakeholders. Every member can help us get to where we all want to be, consistently competing for championships.
