K-State coasts past Savannah State in final non-conference game, 92-51

Jan 10, 2004 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Tim Ellis scored a career-high 22 points and Jeremiah Massey and Marques Hayden each had double-doubles as Kansas State beat Savannah State 92-51 Saturday night.

Ellis was 9-of-12 from the field, Massey had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Hayden had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Kansas State (8-3), which led by as many as 33, broke a two-game losing streak and won its eighth straight game at home. The Wildcats had lost consecutive road games at UMKC and Saint Louis.

Kansas State led by 28 at halftime in giving Savannah State (1-16) its eighth straight loss on the road. The Wildcats shot 57 percent from the floor and outscored the Tigers 32-16 in the paint in the first half.

The Tigers quickly took a 6-0 lead, but it was all Wildcats after that. They answered with a 27-4 run and put the game out of reach early in the first half. Ellis scored 10 points in six minutes during that stretch, including a 3-pointer and a dunk.

Kansas State made the lead 35-14 after Hayden slammed home an assist from Frank Richards.

Ajmal Gordon led Savannah State with 11 points.

The Wildcats won despite two key players being sidelined with injuries. Freshmen Dez Willingham has a shoulder injury and Cartier Martin has an ankle injury. Both are out indefinitely.
