Notebook: A massive offensive lineman who has made a successful transition from defense to offense... Has started the first two games at left guard after appearing in just one game last year.
Growing up, who were your sports heroes?
“Walter Payton. Michael Jordan. Refrigerator Perry - he's probably number one. I grew up in Chicago, so those guys were my idols.”
Who inspired you to pursue football?
“Definitely my father. He's always been my number one fan, through good and bad.”
You actually started out as a defensive lineman. What prompted the switch to offensive line?
“I just wanted to started and help the team. I knew I'd have the opportunity to play at left guard.”
Has that been a difficult transition?
“Yes and no. I've got a great coach in (offensive line coach Bob) Stanley. He's really helped me through the transition.”
In the Big 12, who do you consider your biggest rival?
“Since we're the Big 12 champs, I'd have to say it's everyone. When you're the Big 12 champs, you've got the target on your chest. Everyone wants to take you down.”
What's the toughest Big 12 stadium to play in?
“I actually haven't played there, but from what I hear it's Texas A&M. I'm excited to play there this season.”
You transferred to K-State from USC. What's the biggest difference between Manhattan, Kansas and Southern California?
“Everything. Everything is different. The people in Kansas are so much nicer - that's probably the biggest difference. And the fans ... we've got the best fans in the world. There's no comparison.”
If you weren't playing college football, what sport would you be playing?
“Wrestling. I also did track in high school, but I really love wrestling and football.”
How long have you and your wife Cara been married?
“We've been married for about a year.”
Which do you prefer Jessica or Ashlee Simpson?
“Oh, Jessica. There's no comparison. C'mon, seriously ...”
What do you think of marriage so far?
“Married life is great. I've got an awesome wife who cares for me.”
Has it been difficult to balance the responsibility of being a college football player with the responsibility of being a family man?
“You know, it would be if I had a different wife. Cara's awesome. She plans her schedule around football. I really appreciate that.”
What's in your CD player right now?
“Marvin Gaye. I used to listen to Marvin Gaye with my father when we were lifting weights and training. I listen to Marvin before every game now. It reminds me of the good times with my father.”
What's your favorite movie?
“Legends of the Fall.”
Which do you prefer Letterman or Leno?
“Leno.”
Which do you prefer Yankees or Red Sox?
“Yankees.”
What are your plans after graduation?
“Just to get my degree and be a good husband and father. Everything else will take care of itself.”
