Manhattan - Kansas State had no answer for Texas’ Mira Topic as the senior outside hitter tallied 25 kills Saturday night to lead the No. 11 Longhorns to a 30-24, 32-30, 30-23, win over the No. 16 Wildcats before 1,682 fans at Ahearn Field House, snapping Kansas State’s 21-match home winning streak.
With the loss, Kansas State fell to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 play, while Texas remained undefeated at 15-0 and 7-0. The loss at home was K-State’s first since a 3-0 loss to Texas back on September 28, 2002.
Vali Hejjas was the lone Wildcat to eclipse 10 kills, finishing with 10 on .172 hitting, while Agata Rezende and Sandy Werner each had nine kills. The Longhorns, who hit .364 for the match and out-blocked the Wildcats 10 to 5.5, held K-State’s top two hitters, Hejjas and Lisa Martin to .172 and .238 hitting, respectively. Three Wildcats, Gabby Guerre, Katie Stanzel and Angie Lastra, collected eight digs on the night.
Texas took game one after breaking open a 15-15 game by going on a 15-9 run, 30-24. The Longhorns hit .400 for the game while holding the Wildcats to a .049 mark.
Kansas State and Texas each built small leads, none greater than three, in game three as a Rezende kill tied the game at 20. The Wildcats took a two-point lead at 25-23 and eventually had a game point at 29-28. But, the Longhorns battled back and took the game with a 32-30 win. The Wildcats bounced back to hit .400 in game two but Texas’ .357 mark proved to be enough.
The Longhorns dominated game three, hitting .341 to the Wildcats’ .114 mark to take the match, 30-23. K-State fell behind, 15-10, and never really regrouped as a Hejjas kill brought the Cats to within 27-21, but it would not be enough.
Kansas State returns to Big 12 play on Wednesday when No. 5 Nebraska visits Ahearn Field House. First serve is set for 7 p.m. for the match, which will be televised by Fox Sports Midwest on a tape-delay basis.
