Peete Tabbed Phillips 66 Big 12 co-Rookie of the Week

Dec 13, 2004 | Men's Basketball

DALLAS, Texas Kansas State sophomore guard Fred Peete was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference co-Rookie of the Week on Monday after he averaged a team-best 16.5 points on 59.1 percent shooting in helping the Wildcats to come-from-behind victories over Oakland and Wyoming last week.

Peete, who shared the weekly honor with Oklahoma’s Taj Gray, is the first Wildcat to earn the rookie award since Jeremiah Massey won it for the second time on March 8, 2004.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Peete helped Kansas State (6-0) remain as one of just 19 unbeaten teams remaining in Division I and one of just four in the Big 12 Conference.  He averaged a team-best 16.5 points in two games last week on 13-of-22 shooting (59.1 percent) with 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in 35.0 minutes per game.

Peete is coming off one of the best clutch performances by a Wildcat in recent memory in Saturday’s 64-61 win over Wyoming.  In scoring a career-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting, he was one of the main reasons the team rallied from a nine-point deficit with just under four minutes to play.  He scored 12 points during the span, including the game’s last eight points.  He tied the game on a three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining then scored the game-winning points on a lay-up and free throw with one second to play.  Peete was 5-of-6 from the field in the last 3:34 with one steal and one rebound.  For his effort, he was named the most valuable player of the Bluecross/Blueshield Wyoming Shootout.  Peete finished with his first 20-point effort to go with four rebounds, three steals and two assists in 35 minutes.

Peete also tossed in nine points in the come-from-behind 76-69 win over Oakland on Monday to go with four rebounds and four assists.  The Wildcats trailed by 15 points in the first half before rallying for the victory.

Peete ranks among the top three on the team in several categories, including first in steals (1.7 spg.) and minutes (33.3), second in scoring (12.8 ppg.) and assists (3.2 apg.) and third in rebounding (5.7 rpg.).  He ranks among the top 20 in the Big 12 in three categories, including seventh in defensive rebounds (5.17), 14th in steals and 19th in scoring.  A transfer from NE Oklahoma A&M, Peete was a NJCAA third team All-American as a freshman last season.

Off to its best start in seven years, Kansas State has the week off for exams before hosting the first of four home games against Texas-San Antonio (3-3) on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum beginning at 7 p.m.   The Wildcats are 6-0 for just the 13th time in school history and are off to their best start since 1997-98 team posted nine straight victories to open the season.

The conference also announced that Iowa State’s Curtis Stinson was named the Big 12 Player of the Week.
