KANSAS STATE HEAD COACH JIM WOOLDRIDGE
On the game...
“I thought in the second half we put together some really good stretches of basketball on both ends. We found Jeremiah Massey back in that low post and he goes to the free-throw line 17 times. Quite honestly, we just have to have him do that, and that’s where he’s going to make his living. Our guys did a good job of getting the ball down there. He was aggressive. I thought he was more aggressive in the second half than he was the first half. The results were 17 free throws.”
On the use of the bench...
“The plan was to use more guys tonight. The goal is to develop more bench strength. We need it. I thought Justin Williams’ minutes were extraordinarily good. These back-to-back games are the best that he has performed in. Maybe this game was his best game. We’ve got to keep going with this bench because we know we are going to need it. We are playing a lot of guys a lot of minutes. Jeremiah is playing 35 minutes, Clent had 32 tonight, and Fred Peete has played a lot of minutes in these eight games. We need to try to develop more guys to help off the bench. It was a plan that we were going to use a lot of guys, particularly in the first half. Curtis Allen got a short burst of time, along with others. We need help off that bench.”
On the 8-0 start...
“I think what it means right now is that whatever we put up in front of our guys in terms of games, they’ve met that challenge and been able to win. I think at the same time, every player and coach knows that we have a lot of work ahead of us. We’ve got to get better, we’ve got to improve, and we’ve got to into better shape together. It’s a wonderful way to start the year. It certainly gives you a chance. You hope you become more confident, you hope you blend your team together. The fact that you’re winning definitely beats the alternative.
On the defense...
“We had had trouble at times in transition, we had trouble at times defending in the post. I’d have to look at the tape to see what kind of job we did on him (NIU’s Mike McKinney). He’s their leading scorer, so apparently he did something good.”
