Manhattan - Baylor got a complete-game win from Sean Walker in game one and Trey Taylor held Kansas State to four hits over eight innings in the nightcap as the Bears swept the Wildcats Saturday in a Big 12 doubleheader by identical 8-1 scores at Tointon Stadium.
With the two losses, Kansas State fell to 22-22 on the season and 2-15 in Big 12 play, while Baylor improved to 22-22 overall and 10-8 in league play. The Wildcats have now lost 15 straight Big 12 games after starting league play at 2-0.
In game one, K-State’s Brett Bagley (4-6) lasted four innings after striking out seven Bears but he did allow six walks. The senior gave up four runs, two of which were earned, all coming in the second inning. Baylor used two walks, an error and a balk to go along with two hits to put a four-spot on the Wildcats to take the early 4-0 lead.
Walker gave up nine hits and one walk while striking out three in the complete-game effort to improve to 3-5 on the mound.
Baylor then added two runs in both the seventh and the eighth innings to up its lead to 8-0. The Bears’ two runs in the seventh came on run-scoring singles from Kevin Sevigny and Chase Gerdes, while Sevigny added a two-run single in the eighth off reliever Eric Rollins.
K-State got on the board in the ninth when Brian Patty drove in Josh Dent from second, who had also singled. Patty led Kansas State at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, while Ryan Saltzgaber and Josh Dent each had two hits.
In game two, Terry Blunt led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle off of Taylor, but the lefty retired the next 15 hitters he faced until Saltzgaber’s leadoff double in the sixth. Taylor then retired the next three hitters to end the Wildcat threat. For the game, Taylor gave up one run on four hits and recorded five punchouts to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Carlos Torres took the loss for Kansas State to fall to 5-5 on the mound. Torres threw 7.0 innings and gave up six runs on 13 hits while striking out six and walking three.
Baylor used a balanced attack in game two with one run in the third, two in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings and one more in the seventh. Danny Wilson relieved Torres and threw the final 2.0 innings and gave up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
K-State once again avoided the shutout by scoring a single run in the ninth as Zach Troilo scored from third on a balk by Zane Carlson. Troilo led off the ninth with a single up the middle and moved to third on two walks.
Kansas State will look to avoid its fifth straight sweep in conference play Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Tointon Stadium. The Wildcats will send Jim Ripley to the bump, while Baylor will counter with Andy Pape.
