Wildcats fall to Huskers in double overtime, 95-85

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Kansas State and Nebraska slugged it out for 50 minutes, but it was the Huskers that claimed the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams, knocking off the Wildcats in double overtime, 95-85, before 8,003 at the Devaney Center Saturday night.
Nebraska, which led 36-26 at intermission, pushed its advantage to as many as 12 in the second half before having to come from behind to tie the game 69-69 to force the first extra period. Marcus Neal, who hit 9-of-11 for the game from the stripe, canned 2-of-3 free throws with one second to play to send the game into its first extra session.
The Huskers surged ahead in the second overtime and led by three with under 10 seconds to play. But this time it was the Wildcats who came up with the comeback answer as Lance Harris drilled a 3-pointer with just six seconds to go, forcing a second overtime.
However, Kansas State had little left in the tank for the final five minutes as the Huskers out-scored the Cats 15-5 in the final frame for the victory.
Cartier Martin scored a career-high 23 points, including 19 in regulation, and collected a team-high seven rebounds to lead Kansas State (10-2, 0-1 Big 12), which played its first overtime game since suffering an 87-82 loss at Oregon State. on Dec. 6, 2003.
Fred Peete added 13 points before fouling out late in the second overtime and Jeremiah Massey tallied 12 points while playing just 25 of 50 minutes due to a bad ankle.
Wes Wilkinson led five Huskers in double figures with 22 points.
