MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State women’s program announced Monday that the Wildcats have signed Abbi Sunner of Ankeny, Iowa, to a National Letter of Intent (NLI).
Sunner, currently a senior at Ankeny High School, will join the K-State women’s golf team for the 2006-07 season as a freshman, according to head coach Kristi Knight.
“We are excited to add a student-athlete like Abbi to our program,” Knight said. “She is a great student and is a great competitor.”
A three-year letterwinner, Sunner led Ankeny to both the 2003 and 2004 Iowa state championships as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, she finished as the 2005 Iowa High School state tournament runner-up.
Sunner also earned Iowa player-of-the-year honors as a prep and as been a multiple time all-conference and all-state selection.
This past summer, Sunner finished second in the PGA Junior Series at Sioux City, Iowa, shooting rounds of 77-73. She also won the US Cellular Junior Tour Championship with scores of 71-70.
Sunner’s greatest sports thrill thus far was a hole-in-one during tournament play at Jester Park in Iowa. Her sister, Kelli, also played collegiate golf, competing for Simpson College (Iowa).
