
METAIRIE, La. - On November 30th the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association will proudly induct Steve Miller into its Hall of Fame. Miller, former Head Coach at Cal Poly San Obispo and Kansas State, will be joining 12 other individuals to form this year’s Hall of Fame Class.
The 2005 Class includes coaches whose careers rank prominently among some of the all-time greats. Their brilliant coaching careers have left a lasting impression on hundreds of young men and women student athletes, as well as the sports of track & field and cross country as a whole. As such the USTFCCCA will proudly induct them into our Hall of Fame at a special ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, November 30th in Jacksonville, Florida.
This year’s class stands as one of the most diverse in the 11 year history of the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame. Coming from all areas of the country and from different backgrounds and areas of specialty, this group enters as the largest class in the history of the Hall of Fame. The USTFCCCA is pleased to welcome these distinguished inductees into its Hall of Fame.
Steve Miller’s impressive coaching career has seen him serve as head coach of both California Polytechnic State University (1976-1981) and Kansas State University (1981-1986), where he was also the Athletic Director. At Cal Poly, Miller led the Mustang track and field teams to five NCAA Division II national championship titles (3 in track and field and 2 in cross country), and eight California Collegiate Athletic Association titles (4 track and field and 4 in cross country). Miller has been named the NCAA National Coach of the Year five times during his illustrious coaching career and has coached such greats as Olympian Bart Williams and multiple NCAA distance title winner Jim Schankel. Miller is currently the President and Chief Operating Officer for Devine Racing.
Steve Miller Career Retrospective
During his standout coaching career at Cal Poly, Steve Miller led the Mustang track and field teams to five NCAA Division II national championship titles (3 in track and field and 2 in cross country), and eight California Collegiate Athletic Association titles (4 track and field and 4 in cross country).
Arriving in 1976 from Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, Miller coached several All-Americans and NCAA Champions including Cal Poly Hall of Famer Jim Schankel, an eight-time national champion and Joe Siai Siai, the school record holder in the 200 meters and 110 meter hurdles. Named NCAA National Coach of the Year five times in his career, Miller would later become the head coach at Kansas State, where he coached the Wildcats for five years and serve as Athletic Director for three years. Miller was responsible for the hiring of current K-State head football coach Bill Snyder in 1989.
In 2000, Steve retired from Nike as Director of Global Sports Marketing and joined the Professional Bowlers Association as President and CEO. Steve also sits on the Board of Directors of the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation and the Warsaw School of Sports Marketing at the University of Oregon. Miller is currently the President and Chief Operating Officer for Devine Racing. He and is wife live in Portland, Ore., and have two children .
