Snyder to drop New Year's Eve ball

MANHATTAN, Kan. Legendary Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder, who retired as the Wildcats’ head coach in November, will be the featured guest at this year’s Little Apple New Year’s Eve Celebration and Ball Drop in Aggieville and has been selected to push the button that brings down the ball, Manhattan Festivals, Inc., has announced.
“We are very excited that Coach Snyder has agreed to be an important part of our community New Year’s Eve event,” said Steve Levin of Varney’s Book Store, the event’s Lead Sponsor.
Manhattan, Kan., affectionately known as “The Little Apple,” is the site of an annual event held in Aggieville, an entertainment district adjacent to Kansas State University. Along with thousands of revelers in attendance, TV viewers across the nation will have a chance once again to cheer on Snyder as Fox News Channel broadcasting portions of the event live.
“The Fox folks expressed particular interest in Coach Snyder,” says Kate Watson co-founder of the event. “He is a beloved icon of leadership not only in this community, but nationwide. We are honored that he will lead us in ushering in 2006.”
The Little Apple New Year’s Eve Celebration and Ball Drop culminates a full day of fun, food, shopping, and party atmosphere at Manhattan-area establishments. The family-friendly street party begins at 11:30 p.m. in Aggieville and includes music, videos, fireworks, laserworks, a confetti shower and a Tribute to the Troops.
Amid a shower of fireworks and confetti, the celebration’s grand finale will take place just prior to midnight and will features a count down and ball drop from atop Varney's Book Store started by Snyder.
Last year, a crowd of nearly 9,000 made history by breaking Aggieville attendance records.
Sponsors of this year’s event include Varney’s Book Store, The Eye Doctors, Jon Murdock Chevrolet-Cadillac-Mitsubishi, C150 and the K-State Student Union.
