DEKALB, Ill. - Clent Stewart drained a 3-pointer with less than a second to play to force overtime, but Northern Illinois scored final five points of the game as the Huskies turned back Kansas State 75-70 Tuesday night at the NIU Convocation Center.
Cartier Martin scored 15 points and David Hoskins added 15 before fouling out to lead Kansas State (7-2).
Stewart, who scored nine of his 11 points from beyond the arc, was the only other Wildcat to finish in double figures as K-State was plagued by foul trouble all night long and had two players foul out of the same game for the first time this season.
Akeem Wright added nine points and grabbed seven boards at aid the Wildcats’ cause.
Todd Peterson scored 21 points and Cory Sims added 15 to lead Northern Illinois (5-2). Peterson connected on seven of 11 field goal attempts, hit four 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds, while Ben Rand added 14 points for the Huskies, who shot 50 percent from the floor.
Kansas State trailed 39-34 at the break and by as many as 10 points with just under nine minutes to play before using a 13-0 run to take a 59-56 lead with 3:59 to go in regulation.
But the Huskies fought back to take a three-point lead with just eight seconds showing on the clock before Stewart canned his trey from the top of the key to force the extra session.
The Wildcats, though, were unable to grab hold of the momentum in overtime as Northern Illinois held Kansas State without a point over the final 2:18 to secure the win.
Kansas State will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 29, when the Wildcats host Belmont at Bramlage Coliseum at 7 p.m.
